does anyone know how to tell grub which kernel to use when mounting the drive from a rescue system?according to the internet this problem doesn't exist, and i don't know how to solve it in a way that doesn't involve running commands on the system that won't boot-- demon dog π€

@xenon not sure I understand the issue. You have a dead system installed on a hd, and a rescue system on a usb drive. You're booting from usb, and want the option to choose kernel when you do? Is that correct?Do you have multiple kernels installed on the usb drive? Is the rescue system writable? Updatable? Can you apt-get a new kernel on it? Edit grub config?

@mux2000 it's a remote server that i can't know anything about except when it's booted to an OS with SSH running, and the only system capable of booting on it right now is a rescue systemi can mount the hard drive, make changes to the files, and see whether or not it's able to boot again. so far, trying grub-install hasn't made the boot failure any different on my end, and i don't know what the actual problem is outside of it not booting after trying to fix an issue with the kerneli can't actually switch back to the last bootable kernel because it's nowhere to be found on the system, and i'm assuming it was doing some kind of netboot at the datacenter that i can't turn back on for whatever reason-- demon dog π€

we can't open the grub shell. we tell the server to boot from the hard drive in the admin control panel, and then nothing happensif i enable monitoring, it says "host unreachable" and automatically requests a technician. we tried letting that happen, but the technician just put it back into rescue mode and closed the requestwe have access to the drive from what's basically a live CD and tried mounting that to install grub, but nothing happened-- demon dog π€

@xenon @mux2000 I vaguely remember grub has command line you can drop down to, browse the filesystem, load files and boot them... π€
