       @urusanChange your homedir in /etc/passwd to /home/me/.dotfiles -- then keep all your files in /home/me

       @urusan Like a guy who's been using Unix for 40+ years, in hierarchical trees. 😆 ~/bin, ~/lib/<lang>, ~/src/<lang>, ~/media/<type> (movies, music, photos...), ~/reference/<category>, ~/clients/<name>, ~/vendors/<name>, ~/projects/<name>, ~/Maildir, ~/public (for FTP, NFS, etc.), ~/www, and so on.Also ~/.firefox, ~/.mutt, ~/.tin, and so on that randos put there, of course.

       @urusan Heard someone here mentioning the P.A.R.A. method a good while ago and started to use that since then.So it's all default for home, and inside the documents folder there is: Projects, Areas, Resources and Archives. The thing is, it's kinda hard to sort things up as I'm working, so I dump everything into the Desktop and when it starts to feel cluttered it's time to clean the room.

       @urusan I use #HomeManager on #NixOS to create lowercase directories like dev, doc, img etc. in ~ and also for managing my dotfiles in ~/.configWorks great and apart from stupid applications that ignore $XDG_CONFIG_HOME or whatever it is called, my home directory stays mostly tidy

       @urusan my stuff goes into ~/tmp, ~/work, ~/bin and ~/myfiles, I only deal with other parts of it when I need to put custom config files for whatever program

       @urusan Stuff like videos and documents I put in their respective folders, then I'll usually have a "backups" folder, a "development" folder, and anything I can't think of a better place for, I give a folder in "Downloads". I've actually gotten rather meticulous about it (which you probably wouldn't believe if you saw how I organize my room)

       @urusan Config stuff: I have .config set up as a git repository and a shell script to link things in for programs that don't support that/preprocess files to work on a new distribution.Other than that I just divide it up projectwise. Things related to my job. Things related to general adulting. Financial/investment records. Etc.Personal creative projects (I have a Fiction directory with various subdirectories)Stuff I'm studying for fun generally gets organized by quasi-syllabus (what book/exercises I've decided to use.)Then there's a few directories for various read-only media. One of ebooks broken down by topic.One of video files/TV series that I want to hang on to long-term for rewatching/sharing.And one giant music collection organized Artist/Album/tracknum - title.extAnd a queue of stuff I've got and don't know whether I actually want read/watch/listen to and whether I want to keep long term that I burn down occasionally, either by actually reading/listening/watching or deciding that the moment has passed and I don't care.(Or, you know, you start to watch it and think 'Wow, this isn't very good.' and stop. And shovel it into the Bitbucket.)
