@pixelfed sorry to be the party pooper but this is a major red flag and something you are strongly suggested to reconsiderIt has been beyond documented and studied in peer reviewed research that #infinitescrolling creates addictive experiences, designed by an industry that thrives on ads and #surveillancecapitalism I am fairly certain you do not wish to be on their side of this ethical issue.https://uxdesign.cc/the-infinite-scroll-effect-how-design-can-hack-your-brain-996a9b8129d9

@yarmo There is no ethical issue when you remove the ads and tracking, as there is no incentive to encourage such behaviour. The timeline pagination is simply a flatList with onEndReached logic, the non-ethical aspect comes in to play by exploiting that with ads or algorithms.

@spacekookie @yarmo Promoting healthy use is a priority, and we're doing this by showing a screen time reminder after a period of time. Addicting behaviour does not wait for infinite scrolling btw, adding a "load more" button wouldn't deter such behaviour. That's why we're taking the proactive step in screen time reminders.

@pixelfed > adding a "load more" button wouldn't deter such behaviour. Citation please? A lot of apps do exactly that. Or at least they make it an option in a well tab in the settings, like @pinafore does. I'm presuming that's based on some observations that it does deter some addictive screen use.@spacekookie @yarmo

@pixelfed that is not how psychology works and this statement frightens me. Ads and tracking are just the way to abuse the addictions created by unethical tricks such as endless scrolling! You are still creating an experience that will hurt the mentally vulnerable by inciting them to stay on the app instead of enjoying life!

@yarmo @pixelfed perhaps a good alternative would be what #Tusky does: a "Load more" button?

@twann @yarmo @pixelfed I think Mastodon does that too... Maybe infinite scrolling can be opt-in because personally I don't find it that addictive (probably because my brain doesn't have a built up mindless scrolling addiction that comes from from using something like Twitter in the past)

@twann @yarmo @pixelfed I think their reasoning is that the addictive part is the algorithmically enhanced lottery effect every time you scroll, not the scrolling itself.
