Why is a single bed called "twin size"?

@urusan Because they're the kinds of bed you put in a twin room.(A room for two people.)

@urusan Ever see "I Love Lucy?" It used to be common for married couples to sleep in the same bedroom, but separate beds.

@urusan I assumed it was because everyone is used to having tons of space now, but back when most people had to live in smaller dwellings with more people, it seemed reasonable to have multiple people sleeping in a bed that size.

@urusan Others have said it, but it's because they're small enough it's generally assumed you would have 2 in the room. Basically size ½, fitting a "single" person per the alt. name. A full-size bed is size 1, fitting 2.And while TV was very focused on using them even for married couples for propriety's sake, that was largely because sex was a taboo topic and actors were rarely married anyway, Lucy and Ricky aside. It's not that it didn't happen; it's just a bit overrepresented.

@urusan it’s not. It’s called a single.😂Here in the UK a twin is somewhere between a single and double bed. Kinda like 3/4 of a double, I suppose.

@urusan because there is historically an even skinnier bed that was a "single" it was about the size of a cot, but we have all decided that that is a nonsense way to sleep, so they stopped making them.
