Stolen theory of the day. Where did the workers go?I’ve heard too of people who have applied to dozens of jobs, had interviews and not hired. There is speculation that they received PPE funds and have to pay them back if they are fully staffed. They pretend they have openings to avoid repayment of the loans.

The company I work for is healthcare and are offering huge bonuses for new hires also and gave long time employees 50 cent raises. Entry level jobs are starting as much as skilled workers.

Also, a lot of companies are putting out hiring signs, saying they're desperate for workers, but when you apply they never respond. Those who do are often saying they require mandatory previous experience and that "corporate" has to first give the approval, and those decisions are handled by "computer algorithms" and "crazy woke HR / human resources ladies".

I've had hiring managers tell me they wanted to hire me on the spot but weren't permitted to without corporate's approval. I've had friends tell me the same issues. 9 out of 10 people 'corporate' are referring them for interviews are failing drug tests and background checks (and credit checks now), and the people they want to hire locally are getting denied approval. Some companies are still mandating masks for employees, though thankfully less so.

@s8n @Evenkeeld i don't think that's how those funds worked. they waited until most of the firings went through, then told people they couldn't fire any more than they already did to qualify.

Many of the folks who were of retirement age,65 and older,that were still working, have dropped out of the working system. Many called it quits during the pandemic,wasn't worth the risk. We lost several doctors and lawyers in this area. Doctor offices,dentist,and the court system is so back logged and trying to catch up. Many offices say they can't take on new patients. My sister works in the medical field and says many days she doesn't get a lunch break.

I went to Walgreens in Central Washington state today. there was a line of about 15 people and a line of cars outside for prescriptions. They have been closed for three or four days due to staffing issues. One person at the counter and one pharmacist. They were working really hard to help everyone, and the other Walgreen's in our area has been closed for days because of an illness outbreak. I have never seen this kind of thing here in this smaller city of around 45K

Three years back I was told by my H.R. that they couldn't find "suitable" workers. A BIG problem with drugs, education and responsibility levels. It's more profitable to just pay overtime to the employees you've got - save on excess benefits. Anyone who can do the math will realize that its a matter of diminishing returns... it costs more to work than to stay home with the kids and cut expenses.

@Evenkeeld it's weird over in the Midwest. Auto manufacturer will pay you, if you stay for a year, a combined hire and moving expense of $7500 in addition to your actual pay. $5k moving up front, $2500 paid out over 12mo.Unrelated field, I saw a posting, emailed the company directly, got the boss. We emailed, spoke on the phone, met in person, got the job offer. Easiest hire I've ever experienced. Granted, I was leaning on the Almighty, but people will hire sober showered people here.

@Evenkeeld I was wondering the same thing, where have all the workers gone? Were is the money and demand for goods/ services coming from when nobody has income? Are households borrowing The wife hasnt worked since our 4yr old daughter was born and havent taken on debt in 3 yrs.
