Is it acceptable for a (paid) early access game to regularly invalidate old saved games?

@urusan It's acceptable even for a non-early access game, if a way to play on older versions is provided.

@urusan I get that save data can change drastically as the game does, but at the same time, they could keep a running version number in the save file and allow it to be imported. That's nothing new; Lands of Lore from 1993 had several versions in the wild between the floppy and CD releases and the save files included the version number the save was created in.

@urusan It depends on how often you have to start over. If it's a management or building game where it takes weeks to do cool things, and new incompatible versions come out no more than a couple of times a year, that's fine (this also assumes the new features are worth starting over for). Meanwhile, if that same game has you starting over every month I would get tired of it pretty quickly.

@urusan I kind of lean towards "No" because of how early Kerbal Space Program was. There were a lot of breaking changes to save files and no real ability to convert them... so I'd spend a bunch of time trying to set up space infrastructure only to have that erased. Start over. Erased again. Etc.I still can't do megaprojects in KSP because even though I know it's irrational, I'm worried the work will vanish again.
