All the controls on this video work without JavaScript, including subtitle selection, which is pretty cool.https://static.fsf.org/nosvn/videos/escape-to-freedom/

@privacybrowser …wait no, when I disable JS completely all it uses are just native HTML5 features of the default video tag (which looks different from your screenshot) :blobcatthink:

@xerz It could look different based on the browser you are using and how it renders the HTML video tag and its options. If you want to replicate my screenshot exactly you can use the pre-release version of Privacy Browser PC.https://www.stoutner.com/privacy-browser-pc/

@xerz In Privacy Browser, you can tell that JavaScript is disabled because the privacy icon is blue as it is in the screenshot (instead of red).

@danialbehzadi @fsf I am not sure there is much of a video player code beyond standard HTML 5, but here is a link to their website about it and a screen capture of part of the page’s source.https://www.fsf.org/blogs/community/help-others-find-free-software-watch-and-share-escape-to-freedom

@privacybrowser Unfortunately native video controls have some a11y issues in some browsers (FF devs are apparently working on it).I think on a site that already has JS, making a progressively-enhanced player to address a11y issues is the right call.I am not certain of anything I just said because my knowledge on video control accessibility is from a while ago.

@Seirdy @privacybrowser Yes, this is unfortunate! It seems mainstream browser engines are so focused on letting webdevs fix their shortcomings that they don't make the simple approaches work properly...

@privacybrowser much better to have some style than replicating the endlessly-replicated ones, i guess!

@privacybrowser @alcinnz from an accessibility (a11y) perspective? That's good to hear.

@privacybrowser @alcinnz I just checked and the situation has massively improved, but Mozilla still has a good amount of work to do. Here’s what a Bugzilla search pulled up for audio/video a11y issues

@Seirdy @alcinnz Honestly, the list doesn’t look any worse than Chromium’s.https://bugs.chromium.org/p/chromium/issues/list?q=audio%20video%20a11y&can=2And both those lists look better than the number of accessibility bugs that I would imagine come out of JavaScript implementations. From a pure accessibility perspective, I can’t imagine how you could not say the preferred implementation in 2022 would be native HTML 5 video tags.

@alcinnz @Seirdy For reference, this is Mozilla’s meta bug:https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=492516As you can see, almost everything has been fixed. One of the three bugs not marked closed appears actually fixed if you read the details. The other two are in progress and are quite minor.

@privacybrowserOn privacy browser mobile it'd be nice if it automatically rotates my screen when viewing a landscape video in full-screen, now I'm constantly having to toggle auto-rotate in my phone every time I watch a video. I think this feature would be very useful to have, I wish there was at least an option for it.
