So I'm trying to get into overnight oats in an effort to expand what I'm willing to eat. I'm not quite at the stage where I'm eating healthy, but I want to make sure when I do get to that stage I can stomach more than 3 things since variety is very important for intestinal microbiomes.Anyway, I added blueberries to it because I want to stop being a little bitch baby about my inability to eat things that kind of burst in your mouth (inb4 cum joke). I hated shit like grapes and berries because biting into them reminded me of an engorged tick popping. The blueberries didn't bother me :yay: but the mushy texture of the oats did. Now I'm at a crossroads - do I add less milk to make it less mushy to enjoy it more, or do I power through it to become less of a pussy?

Probably dehydration. I lost more than that when I had covaids. I basically sweated in bed without eating or drinking for a few days, then after that I didn't have the energy for more than one meal a day.

If you don't like porridge have you tried muesli? Essentially the same ingredients just prepared differently. Porridge doesn't bother me but I prefer food I have to chew personally. What three things do you currently eat?

@Eiregoat I just looked that up - is that basically cereal but with raw oats? For some reason I thought oats had to be wetted down, like they'd hurt your teeth or something if they were raw.I did add a few pinches of leftover granola to give it a crunch which really helped. But, said granola had quite a lot of added stuff which made me upset. I don't think most of it is necessarily bad but still.I used to basically eat pasta, ground beef, chicken, and potatoes lol basically your 'american' food and non-fish Italian food. I'm getting a bit out of my comfort zone now though.

It's rolled oats with dried fruit and nuts. Originally developed by some swiss doctor as a nutricious and easy to eat food for convalescants. I think if you ate just dry cereal grains it'd be very tough on your teeth, yes, rolled oats are fine though.Probably for the best. Did you say you're trying to lose weight? If so I'd aim to cut down on starchy stuff like cereals, pasta, pulses etc. Also, if you don't mind me asking, what's your ethnic background? Might give you some clues about what kind of diet you should be aiming for.

@Eiregoat @Tepid_Tapir Look into making soups, stews and broths to get. Can make them very filling or light to your taste. I spent last year walking around with a thermos full of beef broth I drank from for lunch at work.

@Tepid_Tapir It's going to be mushy anyway, that's what happens with rolled oats soaking overnight. You could try groats or steel cut oats instead, it's all oats in the end but groats or steel cut might have a texture closer to cooked brown rice instead of mush.I'm not certain though as I've done overnight groats, I've just cooked them or added them to stews. You could also just turn the overnight oats into a smoothie and drink it all. Same ingredients with a bit more milk or water just blended up instead of left overnight, should be good.

@Eiregoat @Tepid_Tapir That's just a shitload of onions caramelized and then deglaze with the broth? I've seen people get a trench of a baguette and then run garlic onto it to melt cheese onto :thinknyan:

@Tepid_Tapir Maybe other textures? Crushed almonds, pecans, flax, etc.? Dried berries instead? They rehydrate a bit ime, but not to the point of that turgid quality you're describing.

@Eiregoat Not necessarily trying to lose weight. It's not my main goal currently. I'm more looking to expand foods I'm willing to eat, with the big goal being to largely cut out shit ingredients like high fructose corn syrup, aspartame, just shitty fake stuff in general. Pasta is automatically on that list unfortunately, it's just not a great food.I've never done a DNA test so all that is really cloudy, and largely by word of mouth. I'm not really looking to do a kind of Paleo natural diet though. I am honestly hoping to be able to eat a variety of shit that I might be able to grow.

Gotcha. I lived in the US for a few months and I was kinda shocked by all the HFCS, it really is everywhere. They add sugar to stuff over here too though, kinda hard to dodge.Eggs might be good territory to investigate. Very versatile, easy to produce, generally good for you and reasonably cheap.Sounds like a fun journey.

@Eiregoat @Telvannichad @Tepid_Tapir french onion soup is a great soup to make when you have a ton of onions that are nearing going bad.Delicious hot or cold, but by far the best with some old bread and cheese on top.

@Tepid_Tapir is there a specific reason why you're making overnight oats?Rolled oats already cook very quickly (5 min. tops) and you have more control over the final texture on the stovetop. Two keys to good stovetop oats are:1. Use a larger pan than you think you need to avoid boil overs.2. Add a big enough pinch of salt or the results will be insipid. If you cook them on the stovetop, try varying the ratio of water to oats. If you prefer them more al dente, use equal parts water & oats and they will be pretty stiff.I like mine pretty tender, and use about 2:1. Stop when they are a bit soupier than you want and there's still plenty of liquid still in the pan because the oats will continue soaking up water after you take them off the heat.In the serving bowl I add a generous amount of butter and cinnamon. I've gotten used to it without sugar, it has a natural sweetness - but if you need it sweeter try something like blackstrap molasses or honey.I usually serve with a small crock of milk that I add in stages while eating, without stirring it in.Raisins added during cooking will be plump and tender, or add them while serving for a chewier texture.Nuts are generally a good idea - toast some pecans first for a real treat.Cut up a granny smith apple and try adding that, or any other fruit that suits you.HTH

@Herger Overnight oats are something I can just grab in the AM while I'm a zombie, and be on the move with it if needed. Also the S/O likes it. But we will probably occasionally do other stuff some mornings. As to why oats specifically, I hear they aren't terrible for you and I have a hard time stomaching anything too heavy. Normally I'd just eat a piece of plain toast.I'll definitely try them warm but it may have to wait till the weekend lol

@Eiregoat I was genuinely astounded by how many things have HFCS! Soda and candy yeah I could have guessed that. But ketchup, steak sauce, cold cuts, pickles, even bread! It's like a game to see where we can hide it.Lately I've been trying to buy a brand called HEB Select Ingredients; they try to be more natural and exclude a ton of 'synthetic' ingredients, including HFCS. It helps take the guesswork out of buying shit.I've been planning on getting chickens and quail someday. I'll have so many eggs I won't know what to do with them.

@Eiregoat I don't think bees are necessarily any harder than your larger livestock. The biggest issue with bees is you can't control them so there's a tad bit of luck involved. But they're very interesting.
