this was my first smartphone - the HTC Hero - it was a lot easier to root than today's phones - i was trying to root a more recent Android phone one time and i couldn't do it. it was easier back then.

one of the reasons i abandoned Android and went for iOS instead was long term support.say what you will about Apple, but they're much better at supporting old devices than most phone manufacturers.buying an Apple device is more of an investment. which matters to me, because i only randomly have money. so my device needs to last for many years.Apple's stuff may be expensive, but they got you covered.

i would actually be somewhat prepared to argue that if you're poor, buy an iOS device and not an Android device. there's a figure of speech in Norwegian: "it's expensive to be poor." and i feel this very much applies to the iOS/Android situation.

sure, you can go for Samsung's flagship Android device, but what is even that? they launch new devices all the time. do they support their older models? Apple does that.

@thor For modern ones it depends, some are really easy (if you have some degree of tech literacy) and others are a pain in the ass.

@thor If you don't rely on community support, then you're kinda screwed yeah. It is quite good for a sizable portion though, the ones that aren't very locked down at least.

@thor Were it not for the introduction of the Pixel line, I may have considered switching a few years ago. Now? My 3 year old Pixel 3 is still running like a dream. I expect to get another year or two out of it... Maybe 3 if I am willing to root it & tinker a bit.Biggest concern is the battery. I loathe how batteries are no longer easy to change in phones. Planned obsolescence is a whole other kind of evil.

@allenstenhaus @thor Note that Pixel 3 series no longer receives security updates. Support ended in 2021.GrapheneOS provides an extra year of harm reduction updates to the OS, but cannot update firmware due to lack of code available for it now that Google no longer provides it.I highly recommend you take a look at GrapheneOS. I run it on my Pixels, and I only ever use Pixels because of it.https://grapheneos.org/

@inference @allenstenhaus Apple is still selling the iPhone 11. it seems they no longer sell my particular model, the iPhone 11 Pro, but the fact that a phone at that generation is still being sold as new means i still have years of OS updates left, i think.

@thor @allenstenhaus iPhone 6S is still supported by Apple, AFAIK.Google has a clear timeframe for Pixel support:https://support.google.com/nexus/answer/4457705?hl=en-GBOnly Pixel 4 and newer are now supported.

@thor @allenstenhaus That's true. However, Google has now increased Pixel support time from 3 years to 5 years. This is minimum, not maximum. Pixel 6 series gets 5+ years.

@inference @allenstenhaus makes sense for a flagship device. i guess with Apple the thing is that most of their devices are flagship devices in some respect.

@thor @allenstenhaus Apple also control iOS and the hardware it runs on. Less freedom, but tighter integration and the ability to support their own devices for as long as they want.

@thor @allenstenhaus Based on my previous experience with Samsung, they aren't great phones, and they are quite bad for security. They are also behind on security updates most of the time, unless you have a flagship device, but even that isn't guaranteed.

@inference @allenstenhaus i don't know if this is true of all Android phones, but it seems to be a tendency: the touch screen responds before your finger actually touches it. they're capacitive so you don't actually need to touch the glass for the screens to sense it. there's a field. but it can be miscalibrated, and then you're accidentally touching things all over the place. i hover my finger over things before i intend to actually touch them, so this drives me nuts.

@thor @allenstenhaus This has happened to me in the past, yes. I can hover my finger over them by around 1 mm and they'd respond. Don't seem to have that issue on my current Pixel 4a (5G).

@inference @thor @allenstenhaus The software on Samsung phones in general is pretty bad from what I've seen by trying some out. Bloated and so on, plus there's their half assed 'ecosystem'.

@dushman @thor @allenstenhaus They put a load of bloatware in the verified boot partition, too, and even make Facebook have system_app privileges. It's insane.

@dushman @thor @allenstenhaus system_app is an SELinux privilege level which allows access to hardware, IMEI, SN, and effectively root access.OnePlus seems to do this with Netflix, too.Imagine running Facebook or Netflix as root...

@dushman @thor @allenstenhaus Yes, they use some weird bootloader which requires non-standard software such as JOdin.Their HSM also blows an efuse on bootloader unlock, so you can't use it to store keys with a custom OS.
