tech companies be like "here are tools to monitor your child's private conversations, social media posts, bank accounts, diaries, browsing history, class attendance, GPS location, and deepest inner thoughts" with parents going "why child not trust me???? ?????"

you're not even allowed to develop a sense of self before the age of 20. it's a happy accident if you do. before that, you're expected to be a bundle of nerves jumping to the cruel whims of random adults.and these people want to increase that to age 25. actually disgusting.

@AmyZenunim This is I find it so disturbing when people "joke" about increasing the age of consent to 25 because "that's when your brain is fully developed".What they are basically saying is you're not allowed to make your own decisions, particularly about sex, gender and sexuality, right up to the point where it starts becoming difficult to change course. It is purely control masquerading as morality.

@AmyZenunim I've yet to see any evidence that a sheltered person at 25 would make any better decisions than a sheltered person at 20, past a certain point maturity comes with experience, not physical ageing. All you really get is five more years in limbo.

@marenzie @AmyZenunim my guess is, they don't feel like they're competent at raising children, so they grab onto every little crutch that promises to help them.Also them not understanding internet probably contributes to that.

Shit like ChromeOS and FamilyID and so forth is endemic and I get accused of being a Luddite pretty regularly. I'm a supercomputer engineer at a national research lab, but random teachers feel the need to accuse me of being "afraid of technology" on a fairly regular basis.

@seth do you *really* "need to see what he's saying online and to his friends"?and...if you really do then maybe just *ask* him what he's talking about online and with his friends? Like...when I was growing up that was really the only practical option parents had :blobcheeky: yeah I know we weren't "extremely online" in the 70s and 80s but honestly I feel that daily life isn't all that more dangerous for kids it is just...differently dangerous. One thing I thing that hasn't changed over time is that the most well adjusted kids seem to be the ones who have the most open dialogue with their parents, and if anything surveillance, whether covert or overt, seems to be a surefire way to suppress that dialogue.@AmyZenunim
