Someone give me the skinny on E-Bikes. Are they viable for a (reasonably) low tech method of getting somewhere in a no gas situation? youtube.com/watch?v=_QJbgUxNnRg

@ConfederateHobo Yeah, they’re pretty easy to build and maintain, the batteries can be a fucking cunt depending on supplier. A person could, within a year, collect all the material they’d need in order to run one for the bulk of their life apart from batteries. Those have a half life of years, but it’s a half life none the less. Bad brands are more prone to spontaneous failure. I recommend avoiding a great deal of complexity in your gears.

@SpaceElf So even these get absolutely bushwhacked on the battery question. I may have to just sack up and learn to ride a horse.

@ConfederateHobo >Sack up oh no, a big friend you can pet and hug what’ll you do?The batteries aren’t important, though. I ride something like 40km a day at this stage, it isn’t hard. You can get fit enough that the battery question ceases to matter. what’s actually important is having the skills to repair wheels and shit.

@SpaceElf do you have any recommendations for E Bikes, because I've been looking into them recently and wanting to buy one

@Distant_Ranger If you’re going to get an Ebike, get one that has pedals that allow it to function completely without power. Preferably get a good, solid bicycle for the environment you want to use it in and then add on the electric motor. This way if it breaks you’re not without transport. You just swap out the broken part or remove the motor entirely.

@ConfederateHobo Get fit, get a solid regular bicycle instead. E-bikes are convenient but depend on electrical infrastructure and batteries. Horses as you mentioned down thread are pretty great, but require a lot of time, space and money in order to keep and manage (basically have to reorder your life to make it work).

@Umlauts @ConfederateHobo plus if you ride a horse you can yee-haw as much as you want without looking like a LARPer :blobcowboy: You can even, dare I say it, call people "partner"

@Umlauts @ConfederateHobo Yeah, I wouldn't suggest horses for anyone who has not ridden a horse or mucked a stall. I have done both and I still do not feel like I would be able to have a horse for transportation without a significant learning curve.

@sickburnbro @ConfederateHobo Also food costs, veterinary costs, land costs, gear costs and whatever else I'm forgetting.

@Umlauts @ConfederateHobo yes, food cost, holy hell, people think "oh man, horses are FREE" dog, those animals need gas, and it's called poly bags full of grain.Oh sure, if you have like 3 acres of grass, you can substitute that... during the growing season.

@sickburnbro @ConfederateHobo Don't eat just any thing that grows too, one thing most people don't think about in regards to feeding horses.

yeah if you're planning to return to a pre-industrial age, move to be near an Amish community and make friends.

@Umlauts @ConfederateHobo on the other side, I've recently learned that chickens *will* actually eat almost anything, which .. I guess given that they eat bugs normally, makes good sense, what isn't a protein upgrade

@sickburnbro @Umlauts @ConfederateHobo Making chickens eat the bugs and then having people eat the eggs/chickens would probably result in more net nutritious food than the current scheme where chickens eat exclusively corn and they're desperately trying to get people to eat the bugs.

@Sprayfoam_Sal @ConfederateHobo @Umlauts yes, that's the irony of this. Chicken are designed to eat bugs, people are not.

@ConfederateHobo I've considered a conversion DIY kit for my hybrid bike. It's not that expensive and it's easy to remove or change.

@ConfederateHobo I've seen two ways of doing it that seem pretty simple.>Option 1 (pic 1) REPLACE WHEEL Changing the front wheel completely for a powered one. They use a "1000 watt" brushless motor in this and there's no drive or chain required. Looks like there's no drilling. Downside to this is the replacement wheel is 26 lbs, which is insanely heavy for a bike wheel and will make going by pedal power much harder. For comparison, a standard wheel is like 2-5 lbs. >OPTION 2 - pic 2/3 ADD ON MOTOR 250 watt add on motor with "freewheel" mode that doesn't engage the motor at all unless you choose to use it. Runs via secondary chain powering your wheel directly and can go on back wheel only. Almost all weight is carried on frame (this is good). Using this as a standard bike is very possible. About 12 lbs + battery weight. Requires drilling into frame. Both of these options are around $100 ± $20. You still have to get batteries, and building a lithium ion pack is pretty simple. Batteries themselves will often run around $5 a piece for 21700s or 18650s depending on whether you want more distance or less weight.

@ConfederateHobo I personally like the idea of having a brushless motor, but I wouldn't want to lose my actual bike for it. Also having front wheel drive is pretty cool. Maybe I'm overestimating how bad pedalling would be with extra wheel weight, especially since it's on the front wheel rather than the back. Top speed on the brushless one was listed at 49 km/h which is pretty fast too.

@BowsacNoodle @ConfederateHobo Something I might consider when talking about it: You’ll be picking the easiest line possible, not necessarily the mountain bike trail. I’ve had this convo with friends before, looking to get more use out of their older MTB build, and they tend to worry a lot about the front wheel weight, for somewhat good reason: For a mountain bike (fun), wheel weight is tiring, it drains you because you burn energy pumping the front to loft the wheel over obstacles and crawl over terrain. A survival bike won’t be playing around like that though, it’ll be transiting the easiest line possible. It’s still not a total non-issue, however. You’ll be adding a hell of a lot more work to get it over stuff like curbs or blocks. I think my theory would be to get a good 29” wheel if it’s powered, then you could just meet the edge of the obstacle, turn on the power and let the wheel crawl itself up and over. The whole idea is cost and ease, though. At a certain point in the build we got to the point of “well just buy an e-bike then” because he was going to have to overhaul all kinds of crap to make it work. (aluminum or carbon frame, DS air shocks, ~23 lb bike does not a solid bike camper make)

@WashedOutGundamPilot @ConfederateHobo Good points. If you want to commute with it as a motor scooter 🛵 replacement, the front wheel might be better alternative. You can pick any sort of batteries or whatever you want. Packs can be built to allow you to quickly swap them or power other stuff or even charge on a solar panel trailer. I don't think you'd have to worry about all sorts of crazy stuff regarding shocks and such if you're adding under 120 lbs between camping gear and bike parts.
