New blog post: Two Years of Life with PinePhonehttps://linmob.net/two-years-of-owning-a-pinephone/It has a weird title and is too long, but I still hope you will enjoy reading it! #PinePhone

@linmob I've not read the article yet. (It's open in another tab) . I commend you and others that are out there on the bleeding 🩸 edge with these things.

@linmob I daily drive pinephones and have been for quite some time. Over a year anyway. Two with a brief pause (where I didn't really have a phone hah). Must say pinephones have weaned me off of the paradigm of a "mobile apps" and "always connected" lifestyle. I even canceled my cell service and use jmp.chat instead 😁 I do not recommend it for anyone that has any hesitation about lifestyle changes. It is not convenient haha

@linmob "the reasoning made sense: Manjaro had developers on board for this effort, PINE64 had good relations to KDE e.V., and shipping the competitors Phosh UI on a not community-branded phone would have been problematic"This kind of reasoning kinda /&%(/&/$ me off. I don't see the #librem5 and the #pinephone as competing. For me the competition is proprietary software and hardware and the google android and iOS duopoly. We need both the #librem5 and the #pinephone

@linmob we don't need the two companies out there that make linux first phones competing with each other. We need 20 or more linux phone first companies competing against proprietary software and hardware.

@linmob Good article! I still have the Braveheart as a secondary (separate SIM plan and all), but the battery unfortunately went out last month :( I'm dragging my feet on getting the replacement. Thanks for putting out opinions like this!

@linmob rewording to "Two Years Living with the Pinephone" would make the title so much less awkward but say the same ✌️😎

@linmob Who's your mobile carrier. Not that it's any of my business, but are you American? Every time I get excited about some custom ROM or other Spamdroid workaround it seems the short answer is that it is not possible in America.

@n8chz I am in Germany, so I can't really help you here. From what I've heard, the US carrier ranking seems to be (from okay-ish to problematic): T-Mobile, Verizon, AT&T – which is interesting, because from what I've learned regarding US carriers over the years I would have bet it would be T-Mobile, AT&T, Verizon. @kop316, who has developed lots of telephony related things (MMS, Visual Voicemail, Antispam) for Linux Phones may be able to provide more info.

@maryjane I couldn't agree more, but I sadly don't see it happening. It seems such a scenario would require a new way of doing business, so that a digital market would not lead to a duopoly (or worse) and stay competitive AND cooperative.

@elias @linmob the funny thing to me is I have reintroduced the phrase "one moment I need to check my messages." 😂 and I love that. Or when someone older than myself said "you can use the app." and my response was "I don't have apps."

@torbuntu @elias @linmob how about "work required" apps, like WhatsApp? The company I work at regularly uses WA internally for communication, any recommendations on how to get out of that loophole? The number of weird looks I'd get for saying I can't use WhatsApp any more will be insurmountable 😬

@RyuKurisu @torbuntu @elias WhatsApp is a tough one, as it seems to require an Android or iOS app being online and active every then and now. That could be achieved on the Linux Phone (or PC) with Waydroid, and I suppose the rest could be done with one of the many WhatsApp Web wrappers (e.g. https://linuxphoneapps.org/apps/noappid.alefnode.mobile-whatsweb/ or a Matrix bridge (selfhosted, Element One or Beeper).

@linmob "And boy, can I hold a grudge!"😂We share that trait...My experience is similar to yours, while not having experimented as much with distros and stuff as you.My #Pinephone has been my main phone since December 2021 IIRC. It's not been without its hurdles. The thing that annoys me the most is the delay in SMS text reception. Sometimes it's instantaneous, (most) other times there can be up to hours of delay before I receive them.Still haven't flashed the Quectel modem FW though.

@linmob @n8chz Yep! I have been using a #librem5 for six months full time now, and I use T-Mobile USA. the #pinephone also works, I know there has been lots of success with using @mobian and @postmarketOS

@linmob Sad to read that people just don't care about the myriad of warnings plastered on every pinephone outlet saying "Don't buy this if you're not a developer!". Comments like "can't believe i almost shelled out 200 dollars for this thing" really make this clear. It's not that it's "not ready yet", it *is* ready, just for a different target audience. I would have loved to contribute to this ecosystem, but I never got my librem 5. I bet on the wrong linux phone. Thanks for the writeup!

@linmob Yeah that's probably a more fair way to look at it. I still believe in their concept, it's just that I really dislike the way they handled things communication wise, and their unwillingness to offer a refund for the devices they don't ship. I don't think it's fair to say you get a refund "when your position in line has been reached", when that could take another 5 years for all I can know. I still want one though, just now rather than when i don't have time to work on it anymore. :P

@RyuKurisu @torbuntu @elias @linmob Matrix offers a paid service to bridge from Matrix to Whatsapp:https://element.io/blog/ems-launches-fully-managed-matrix-bridging-for-whatsapp/That would be useful.

@linmob I see your post got pretty popular in some parts of the internet community. One thought for you: maybe have a follow on post about the different folks you know who use the PP(P)/L5 full time and have them talk about their experiences too? (I know that is a fair amount of work though....)

@kop316 @linmob @n8chz i've been using the pinephone full-time for almost 9 months (woah, weird to think about) with Mint Mobile, a budget carrier that uses the same network as T-Mobile. my pinephone actually gets better service than many of my family members phones due to the bands that the modem supports :)
