I use PopOS on my laptop but have had a lot of problems of various kinds and am not completely satisfied so now I will get another distribution. Do you have any suggestions for distros that you are happy with? ๐#linux #distros #askfedi #askfediverse

People hate on Ubuntu (maybe they're right, I dont have an informed enough opinion) but it has always just worked when I used it.

@annasara what kind of problems did you encounter in Pop? I've been on Pop for years and can't imagine switching to anything else on my main productivity rigs.

@annasara I am running Trisquel as my daily driver and love it but a FLOSS distro may not work for your needs. I have also used and enjoyed Manjaro; Garuda; Solus and Linux Mint.

@chanon The boot partition is too small, and old kernels are not removed automatically and have to be done manually which is annoying. And the latest update failed had and apt broke. I have not had these problems with previous distros.

How dare you call it old, it is a Toshiba Tecra from 2011. Don't you know Japanese have longer lifespan than other nations ๐It was a high end laptop for its time (2cores 4threads @ 2.8GHz + 8GB RAM). We only replaced its HDD with a 240GB SATA3 SSD.Problems I had with PopOS, Ubuntu, Elementary, Manjaro, Linux Mint & Debian on that laptop was that they would freeze and turn CPU into a room heater. Everything would freeze, even audio played at the time would stay on loop.@annasara

Sounds like apt botched at some point. I recommend installing LTS build on a clean drive if you can. It sounds like something was going weird from the beginning. After the installation apply updates and restart. It could also be cosmic radiation flipping the a critical bit.@annasara

Yeah, I don't get the Ubuntu hate. I have 2 Ubuntu boxes including one that runs this instance. As you say, it just works. Guessing these are purists who don't like stuff that Canonical did. But these are the same people who complain that Linux adoption is low.

@annasara ah, did you dual boot on a previously partitioned disk? The pop installer makes like a half gig ESP, but Windows and lots of other OSes are like 250mb. Pop munches that up in a jiffy since it uses systemd-boot. Apt can definitely be a hassle too, but I've probably grown accustomed to quarreling with it.Anyway, I've heard a lot of hype about Nix lately. They just released a new installer, so that might be pretty fun to check out.

@annasara @ordabchao might be wrong but "sudo apt --purge autoremove" should actually remove old kernels?! Though it might remove all but the currently running. IIRC I had a script which kept x number of kernel back in my Ubuntu days. On the other hand, what do I know, I'm on #Fedora for years now.

@selea @annasara @ordabchao might be wrong but isn't this actually an Ubuntu issue, even if not Debian!?Nothing wrong with small(er) boot partitions but they should really cleanup. In Fedora its limited to three, but can be configured in dnf.conf

@stoerdebegga @selea @annasara I have a recommendation for everyone. You don't have to follow this of course. But I am acquaintances with a guy named Jay. He has a YouTube channel called LearnLinuxTV. He has taught me a lot of stuff. He routinely gives full on manual installation tutorials of almost any flavor. In these tutorials he cover manually creating partitions -frequently.

@ordabchao Distros should not require such maintenance, thats why I installed popos on mine and my kids machines. I just want a "hands-off" distro that I can install on relatives machines and for my kids. @stoerdebegga It is purely a popos-issue.@annasara

@selea @ordabchao @annasara just recalled I had the very same issue on Ubuntu. Guess 16.04 or so, 16.10 upgrade crashed my disk encryption and I didn't have a backup of the LUKS headers so I switched to Fedora as I had to reinstall anyway.

@selea @ordabchao @stoerdebegga @annasara it's a long standing *ubuntu* issue that popOS seemingly inherited due to it being an ubuntu derivative. Ubuntu has been asked to fix this for *many* years (me included), but they have said they don't want to decide which kernels to remove for people, which is absurd to me because, by and large, people who choose ubuntu, or a derivative, just want the OS to boot and to not break everything by doing something so stupid as continually installing kernels in a small partition, and are not interested in manual kernel management. Even if you wanted to support user choice in this way, i'm guessing you could simply allow people to manually lock a kernel and then skip any locked kernel on kernel cleanup. I swear i heard they were finally addressing this, but i can't find the news anywhere.

While I was looking for another post of mine I came across this thread, so here is an update.I bought a System76 Lemur Pro a couple months back, obviously preloaded with :popos:. Other than me running too many programs to the point of reducing its battery life to half of what is advertised, it works as advertised.@annasara I am not thinking of distro hoping until I get a spare NVMe though. My previous attempt to tinkering ended with me wiping so much stuff ๐
I had backup ๐
