Full disclosure: My wife and I run a small privately owned Vape shop.I spotted a rather misinformed opinion the other day on the Fediverse, that really got under my skin. It's really rare for me to have a strong reaction to a post, but this was directed at my livelihood. I realised after taking a while to think, that the post came from a place of ignorance, rather than malice. So instead of getting angry, I think I should state facts instead. So here's what I know for certain, as fact:1. The NZ Vape industry (mum and pop stores) abhor selling to minors. We actively check ID, and report anyone who we know for certain is breaking this fundamental legislation. There are however, definitely some bad actors who give the rest of us a bad name, mostly non specialist stores, and tobacco backed companies.2. The local Vape Industry demanded government regulation or oversight, because we saw the potential for large tobacco backed companies to exploit our most vulnerable people. The legislation that is to be enacted in August this year (2022), was in part written with the help of AVCA (Aotearoa Vapers Community Advocacy) and others in the industry.3. We (our small business and many others) have been actively and professionally involved in testing, surveying and supporting Smokefree NZ, and local Quit programmes. Results have been very encouraging, with a rough estimate of about 70-80% successfully quitting cigarettes within 3 months, with good personalised support and the right advice.4. Multiple flavors actually increase the effectiveness of the smoking cessation, rather than hinder it. This is something we the industry, have known for years, and now the regulations have made clear. Tobacco and Menthol is a starting point, not an end game. Smokers need more variety to male it appeal more than picking up a cigarette. It's been proven to work.5. There have been an estimated 75 Vape related injuries since 2016, and over 70 of those are attributable to malfunctioning devices due to defect, neglect or misinformed users. There has only been a couple of poisoning injuries, half of those serious, and all because of tomfoolery or misuse.6. More people are killed by smoking related illness than Vaping. Smoker deaths account for around 13 deaths per day, or 5000 per year (according to ACC and Health NZ), Vaping has had ZERO related fatalities since it became popular around 2016.7. The NZ Vape industry, is currently one of the most regulated in the country, even exceeding regulations in place for Tobacco and Alcohol, in terms of sale; supply chain; clean rooms; wholesale etc.Getting close to my char limit. There is much more to add, maybe I'll revisit this later.Feels better to say something. 👍

@anotherkiwiguy Mexico recently banned all sales of e-cigarettes, but guess what? Regular cigarettes are still allowed! What a coincidence, huh? I wonder what are the reasons... 🤑

@avalos@mstdn.social I can almost guarantee, it will be: - taxes - kickbacks - perks - tobacco lobbyingIts really horrible how the tobacco industry is so insidious.

@anotherkiwiguy So, e-cigarettes have no tobacco? Also, I don't know if lobbying is even legal in Mexico.

@avalos@mstdn.social there is some really vague and confusing nomenclature when it comes to Vaping. Most assume it must be tobacco related in some way. In some cases they're right. The "Heat, not burn" cigarettes, are termed as "Vaping" by tobacco companies to confuse and cloud the issue. "Heat, not burn" is still tobacco. Also clouding the issue is Shisha and Hookah, which are definitely tobacco based products, but sometimes called Vaping in the west.Vaping was originally developed by Herbert Gilbert in 1963 called the "smokeless non-tobacco cigarette". Unfortunately, no-one wanted to manufacture it, and take on the Tobacco Industry. There were other attempts in intervening years, but the current incarnation was invented by the Pharmacist Hon Like, himself a long term smoker in 2003. The impetus, was watching his father pass away of lung cancer. The Vaporizer he created has been expanded upon for many years since, by enthusiasts and hobbyists, who themselves want to quit smoking.Eliquid (the fluid used in Vaping), contains 3 primary ingredients: Propylene Glycol; Glycerol, and Nicotine. Flavors are added to change the base flavor, and most reputable brands use USP certified, and food grade ingredients. Flavors are the same as you might get in candy; drinks; cake frosting etc, and only in tiny amounts (a couple of grams per 100ml).The only tobacco related ingredient, is nicotine, which can also be derived from other sources, including synthetically.Vaping (as far as we in the NZ Vape Industry are concerned) are strong believers in as little reliance on tobacco as possible, and with absolutely none of the volatile chemicals found in tobacco burning. There is one unavoidable compound created during Vaping though, and that is Formaldehyde, but measured in nanograms, as opposed to a cigarettes micrograms.I hope that helps explain things a bit better.
