I just ordered an AMD graphics card, sick of dealing with nvidia's bullshitWhat all do I need to do to get my new AMD card working when it gets here on Friday? Other than removing the nvidia drivers, of course

@neo From what I've heard some of them have hotspot/thermal paste issues that will have them thermal throttling themselves, so if you have performance issues you may have to repaste the shit out of it.

@neo@pl.comfysnug.space this isn't going to help much but it probably boils down to uninstall everything Nvidia and install amdv drivers. Mint might have a specific video driver dialog.

@neo it's pretty much plug and play, the open source drivers got you covered. If you really want, you can install AMD's drivers. I never do, the open source drivers are great.

@Mek101 @neo Well some distros have splits of the radeon/amdgpu parts of mesa and libva and make sure firmware is installed, but for mint it should be just "hello, I have an AMD GPU, install the relevant stuff".

@neo If you want to squeeze every last drop of performance from the card, go ahead and use AMD's proprietary drivers. The open source drivers are rock solid and good enough most of the time, and get regular contributions from AMD which is more than we can say about nVidia.

@neo @lanodan that is a wise decision. Not having to deal with broken X installation every nVidia release cycle has saved me a large amount of aggravation over the years.

@wrongthink@cdrom.tokyo @norm@misskey.biribiri.dev @neo@pl.comfysnug.space Even this is outdated, most Linux distros have live environments/graphical installers to be up and running in under half an hour with no commands typed at all

@neo The AMDGPU driver is really proprietary software, as it relies on proprietary firmware to operate, despite the permissive license. The proprietary AMDGPU-pro drivers consist of software like a opencl implementation and other libraries, that aren't really all that useful.

@drq @Mek101 @wrongthink @norm @neo using tasksel is a great way to end up with exim. It puts you in a "what do I need to uninstall" situation.

@wolf480pl@mstdn.io @drq@mastodon.ml @Mek101@mstdn.io @wrongthink@cdrom.tokyo @neo@pl.comfysnug.space I find it works fine for pre-installing a desktop at install time but otherwise I just install what I need separately.Pretty much every desktop distro tends to be a game of "what do I uninstall" thing anyways so I don't find it a big deal.

@norm @drq @Mek101 @neo @wrongthink it's the "basic system utilities" in tasksel that I have an issue with, as it installs a bunch of unnecessary stuff. As for every distro being "what do I uninstall" - Arch isn't, pretty sure Gentoo also isn't. Idk about Alpine but I'd suspect it to be pretty lean too.

@wolf480pl@mstdn.io @drq@mastodon.ml @Mek101@mstdn.io @neo@pl.comfysnug.space @wrongthink@cdrom.tokyo I mean distros that come with a desktop environment by default. Debian doesn't exactly fit in that category but I kinda see the desktop selection in the installer as akin to the various ubuntu flavours are to the main distro.
