Took a few weeks, but I finally managed to write a response to @lkhrs and his question about email plus addresses.https://kevq.uk/segregating-email-with-sub-domains/

@kev @lkhrs That's quite an interesting setup. Is this something that Zoho and your domain provider allow you to do easily or is did you have to set a lot of dns records yourself?

@kev @lkhrs I try to do something similar. I'll do <service>@domain.com and then create a rule to have all email from that email forward to my actual email address and drop it in a folder.... but I'm so inconsistent with it that I'm not sure I'm getting a benefit from it. I do like the 1password + fastmail integration that will set it up for me though, and I've been using that more often these days.

@joel @lkhrs it’s really simple with Zoho, or any other provider that supports multiple domains.Just set the mx records for that subdomain to Zoho (or whatever service) then add the subdomain as a standard domain with Zoho. Finally add a catchall for that subdomain and you’re done.

@kev @lkhrs I don't really see that as a problem. When I register an account I put it into my password manager anyway, so I'll put both the password *and* the address there. If I have to spontaneously name an address to someone I can usually remember that until I'm on the confuser next. Sometimes I'll just send myself an email as a reminder.

@kev I have been using + addresses but some services don't accept that. I've considered catchall on a dedicated domain but subdomain is a much better implementation. I use bitwarden to track all the unique addresses by just making the login the same as email so it autofills. Bitwarden also has unique login options now (which I'm not using... Yet). But making notes would be annoying. @lkhrs

@kev@lkhrsThanks for the subdomain idea I will try. I had been using a catchall with a domain purchased at njal.LA anonymously and previously anonaddy.com or simplelogin.

@lkhrs @fedops i think what Luke was referring to is how Twitter expects an email address for the password reset, but expects the username for logging in. So the password manager may not have the right data.

@kev @lkhrs I see. One of the nice things about pass is you can put arbitrarily structured (or unstructured) data into each entry since it essentially just pgp's a text file. Only the password is predefined as the first line if you want it to work with the -c option.

@kev @lkhrs Great post, Kev! Do you find catch-all addresses end up getting more spam? That’s always been a hesitation in setting up something similar for myself. Really like the subdomain idea though, I might steal this once I decide whether I’m switching my TLD to something else.

@pete not really to be honest. Whenever i have seen a noticeable increase in spam, it’s always been to a generic address like accounts@, so i just as a rule to bin anything to that address.@lkhrs

@kev Thanks for sharing this :) I also prefer the idea of different addresses rather than “+” style ones. I might try something along these lines!

@kev great post Kev. I started using something similar with Fastmail - it supports plusaddress@user.example.com in addition to user+plusaddress@example.com. That combined with just having 3 common plus addresses has mostly solved my issues. 1Password’s integration helps too with the masked email addresses.

@kev @lkhrs great, thanks for sharing. I used email aliases before, along with way to many domain names. Keepass keeps my email adresses usernames and passwords plus any other relevant account detail. I like the catchall idea to simplify creating aliases.

@kev @lkhrs Do they have a limit on how many domains you can use? like say you have tim@tim.xyz and tim@timrocks.xyz ...

@kev @lkhrs interesting. I do this and have done since about 1997. I virtually never have the issue where I don’t know what email I used. But I like having someone else as my MX (a service like Proofpoint) and so many commercial email services charge by the “account” which means per email address. So I end up exposing my email server’s IP for a lot of my subdomains. And I get more spam and stuff that way. Still, I’m not thinking of changing. It’s a good system.

@kev @lkhrs This is why I find Apple's Hide My Email service invaluable. They take care of all the tech setup and provide a very clean interface that tracks all these addresses, so forgetting what I used where is never an issue. And because I can forward these addresses to any account I like, it means I can still use ProtonMail for my day to day email activity.

@robert @lkhrs yeah, it’s a great service. But having my email hosted on a domain i dont control is a huge no for me.I do use them on occasion for unimportant things, but I’d never use it for an important account.

@kev @lkhrs Completely agreed for important accounts. It is why I use your method for key accounts like Mastodon etc.But with 300 + logins, it is a convenient system for services that are non-essential.
