What ideas (or practices) that still are common today are based on clearly incorrect premises?

I'm thinking about this because I realized after watching a boatload of Ask A Mortician that in my culture we still treat corpses as dangerous because of miasma theory. That is, we still act as though miasma theory was correct today.

@urusan Personality tests, especially for work. "INTP?" Hold on, let me get my crystal ball. Also BMI. Yes, all the muscle and fat in your body with no separation SURELY is a good measure of your health when compared to your height. Especially because muscle is heavier than fat. "Sorry, Mr. Universe, but this chart says you're obese."

@urusan Really? I thought they were dangerous because they grew microbes at a tremendous rate. They don't?

@chiasm While it's true that corpses quickly become host to many microscopic scavengers/decomposers, they're not pathogenic to humans. These are the kinds of bacteria that are constantly trying to kill you, but your immune system effortlessly repulses them all the time.Meanwhile, the pathogenic viruses, bacteria, etc. generally tend to die off within a few hours, and corpses don't cough or sneeze.

@chiasm I mean, admittedly those decomposers might give you a bad time if you ate them, same as if you ate rotting meat...but unless you're planning on eating a decomposing human corpse there's really not that much danger.Poop can also an issue and it's one of the few potentially pathogenic things they have to keep from getting into the environment, but it's no more dangerous than living person poop.

@chiasm What comes from miasma theory is this idea that it's dangerous to even have a corpse around at all.The idea was that "bad air" would hurt you, so you have to either get the corpse away from the living right away or at least stop decomposition with embalming. These ideas first got into my culture at a time when miasma theory was commonly accepted, and these views haven't been reviewed since then.
