@kev me too. Sadly, this is what happens with corporate "open source" which is created purely to grease the wheels of a business. Now it's been sold to Microsoft, and as with almost everything they acquire, they're busy dismantling the good things about it. Never ever trust a corporation. Luckily, when it comes to coding tools, in the #FOSS world, we're spoiled for good choices. (and no, MSFT Visual Studio Code isn't one of them - it's not even open source)

@kev Me too. It's GitHub integration makes the workflow for editing my site super easy. I like it better than VSCode. VSCode just feels too heavy for my usage. Pretty disappointed by this. I guess I'll just kludge together some scripts to automate new post creation and move everything back to vim.

@kev I don't write tons of code ... mostly when I need an editor it's because i want to get HTML or CSS code out of WordPress to somewhere less distracting.I might just use Gnome's editor. I haven't exactly decided yet.I used to have a Sublime Text license that was gifted to me but it doesn't work on the new versions.Anything else I do I typically use nano.

@mike @kev yeah, full vim might be the way to go... or perhaps revisit kdevelop... there're lots of other community-driven (as opposed to corporate ones, subject to the same risks as atom is/was) options that've been quietly been gestating into something quite usable... Will report back if I find something particularly compelling.

@mike @kev I've had an inverse experience with VSCode v Atom.. Atom has always felt kinda slow and lackluster compared to VSCode, IME.I do think though Kev that the best thing you could do for yourself if you convert your workflows over, is spending time getting your preferences and extensions configured -just so-.My setup is simple but it does everything I need it to, quietly and unobtrusively. It works as I intend it to and I'm happy that way.Don't take the stock experience as gospel.

@lightweight @kev Not to start a war, but emacs may be a viable option too. There's basically something for everything in emacs. Might be something out there that integrates emacs and GitHub as easily as Atom did.

@mike @kev @david I'd be so surprised if a fork isn't WIP or if there isn't a fork already.IMO VS-Codium is probably the best editor - the fork of VS-Code.I can't get away from this 6 panel deal. 2 terminals split view, dual editors (expandable to more), a fixed menu on the left with a menu explorer to the right of it.Im a REPL guy anyways, so I basically just need a text editor and terminal but its worth mentioning this project too.https://vscodium.com/

@mike @kev You have VSCodium which is a rebuild from VSCode sources, but without the telemetry enabled by default and the binaries are released under MIT license. For VSCode, the binaries are released under a MS proprietary license.

@Wivik A funny thing for me is that I have VSCode on my work computer, but the permissions are locked down on my work laptop to the point that when I kick off VSCode, it wants to run an update but can't without permission from corporate. So, if I WANTED to run it for work I'd have to get corporate permission every update. If I say no it just closes and doesn't work. It won't use an out of date option. @kev

@kev Ever since Microsoft took over Github, it became redundant for them as compared to VSCode.I don't see a successful rebirth of Atom, as most people would likely move to VSCode much faster than anyone can keep up.A real alternative to al this is Emacs, for those who are ready to put the initial learning time.

@mike @kev @david The big problem for *me* was that in Glasswire on Windows and OSX- LittleSnitch I was able to catch Visual Studio Code sending my keystrokes to some Microsoft owned IP.I dug into it, and it was a "natural language service!". LOL.https://github.com/microsoft/vscode/issues/49161https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=28812486Thats when I went over to VS-Codium. The binaries from microsoft are a god damn snake pit. Last thing I want sent is my code, esp. if its proprietary for work.

@Wivik VSCode used to work fine, but my computer is locked down enough that when an update for it showed up, it won't let me install it. VSCode only starts to the point where it tells me I need to update it, and if I don't it shuts down. Effectively, the app is useless for me if I don't get corporate signoff for every update.@kev

@hirozed @mike i know many who love Sublime. I only need ac relatively nice Code editor with basic git integration. I don’t need fancy linters and all that jazz.I’m a coding luddite.

@kev @mike I’m too much of a rule follower to not have a linter help me. 😄 VSCode has way too many things to tweak and install that I would fall into the trap of overloading the IDE. That being said, what it comes with by default has some pretty decent git integration. You could probably install, hide the Extensions tab and be perfectly happy.
