What if the only people who got to own a gun were veterans? Wouldn't that be very in line with the 2A? Let the VA handle background checks and mental health care. Looking for compromises here people.

@wjmaggos You want the only people to have guns be the class of people most likely to be suffering from PTSD. The VA also sucks at everything. If you feel like you can't trust other people with guns, buy one yourself and learn how to use it.

@cycause I know too many decent people who served to buy that stereotype, yes. I want less guns floating around and I think this kind of compromise might pass. currently, they have guns if they want them. this would only reduce the number of legal gun owners, to adults with health care and weapons training and experience.

I doubt it’s the policies at play here, but the mood of the citizens. I bet we have far fewer shootings per gun owner in the #USA than other states do, and gun suicides astronomically dwarf shooting rates…the real questions are, why do people want to kill other people (why do they feel like violence is justified), and why does the #MSM disproportionately amplify what’s probably the rarest type of shooting (non-gang related multiple casualty mass shootings with diverse or non-white victims), which itself is a subset of one probably of the rarest causes of death in the #USA, shootings in general.

Preventing those situations is a meaningful conversation. The media sure doesn't want to have it though; they're obsessed with taking whitey's guns and using new shootings for clicks

@wind @realcaseyrollinsguns are better tools for violence than knives etc. other countries have these same psychological problems (maybe worse in your book cause they're more lefty politically) but don't have the problems with shootings that we do cause they are more restrictive regarding guns. it's the obvious variable in the equation but your belief system won't let you acknowledge it.

@amerikadon't they already have the ability to decide who can join the military? if they really don't want these people to have a gun afterwards and don't think they can brainwash them during their service, they can orchestrate an "accident". but seriously, they are not going to institute a policy of denying recruits to reduce gun ownership. there's no way that would survive the cultural conflict in those institutions nor not be discovered and ended.
