ah yesi enjoy when hardware manufacturers of ssds lie about the device's true block size causing zfs to perform write amplification

@shibao how does that lead to write amplification?

@tthbaltazar@chaos.social samsung doesn't actually tell you what the real block size is, i took the 512 byte block size for face value, i think internally it may be 4k or 8k

@shibao "controller-less" NVMe drives clearly have an advantage on that point

@helene@p.helene.moe my ssds have written over 60 terabytes with <5k hour power on time :upsidedowncry: :upsidedowncry: :upsidedowncry:

@helene@p.helene.moe basically already used a 10th of it's lifespanwill see if removing the write amplification will improve things

@shibao I think most ssds are 16ksetting a bigger block size can't hurt, I always do at least 4k

@shibao but how does having a smaller block size lead to write amplification?

@tthbaltazar@chaos.social because it'll rewrite the same sector as many times by what the block size it advertises says, so if the block size is actually 4k, then it'll rewrite 4k's worth of data 4096/512=8x over

@shibao I should check my SSDs too, they probably suffer from very similar issues... :ablobcatknitsweats:

@shibao It's not just an SSD thing- it's a general pc hardware thing. I know this from professional experience.
