@stux As an American who has lived in Europe for a decade, I sort of disagree with this video. It is true that if you could "start all over" you might design the US more like Europe, but these things have histories going back centuries. Urban Europe antedates the car by hundreds of years. So cities had to be compact and densely populated from the beginning. That just was newer really the case in the Americas, even in most of Latin America. Also, where people can afford to, they often prefer to live in proper houses as opposed to apartments. I wouldn't, but many people do. This leads to sprawl and a demand for cars. Is it so bad to give people what they want? This video also seems to confuse long distance trains and urban transport (busses/subways). In Europe people generally don't travel long distance (500km+) by trains, except students. They're in a hurry, they fly. But WITHIN their countries or on short, high speed lines (London-Paris) it is quite common.

@stux All true *in general*, unfortunately lots of mistakes like the supposed map of high speed rail in the usa. However, if you want to see an even worse comparison, compare canada's :-( Too big *and* too sparsely populated. I do think vancouver has fantastic rapid transit, but vancouverites don't agree and, frankly, I really don't have experience to evaluate it compared to the zero we have in the rest of BC.@trebach

@stux The solution to traffic congestion is 21st-century flying cars, not 19th-century trains.

@stux This chart doesn't cite any sources. (and it is incorrect) Here in the US those who drive putt-putt cars are paying about as much as the rest of the world (about $5/gallon). (https://www.npr.org/2022/06/06/1103318977/states-highest-gas-prices)I drive an electric car and it costs me about $2.00 to fill it up. (That's $2.00 total cost to completely charge it up.)
