@selea @rs1linuxtools if it was only as simple as having a favourite. Since most of them are not interoperable it is all about what you can get your peeps to use. Which in most cases is WhatsApp/Messenger/Discord and the other mainstream ones.

@rs1linuxtools Of this list I only use Signal and Matrix. Outside the list I still use email, IRC, and on rare occasion Facebook if absolutely necessary for legacy reasons. I had LINE until they deleted Lite and my account access--at least it was end-to-end encypted.I won't touch WhatsApp, Telegram, or Discord with a ten-foot pole because I don't have a legacy account. And do not believe in closed source communications.

@selea @rs1linuxtools yeeaah…no. My experience of birdges is that it just causes issues for one of the parties, especially when you try to bridge an older protocol like IRC to something that is trying to innovate with new features. It just creates an anchor to older technology.

@gustav @selea @rs1linuxtools and those bridges also actually silently break end-to-end encryption on services that have that (particularly without informing the other communication partner, typically), which is… eeeehhh

@koherecoWatchdog @rs1linuxtools hearing that about Signal really makes me sad. I've always enjoyed using and promoting it (by forcing my friends to install it), but now I have to move away from it. There'll never be a long lasting privacy messaging solution good for normies and cultured people alike, I guess.

@Mirk0dex @rs1linuxtools It’s a bummer that secure comms are a moving target. I wouldn’t touch Signal in the 1st place but I used Wire. Both have the problem of being centralized under 1 controller. Moxie is a control freak like Apple. Wire is open to the idea of federating but things have gone to shit w/Wire’s apps faster than any federation got lined up. Your correspondents have to adapt to change.

@rs1linuxtools @Mirk0dex I expect XMPP w/OMEMO to be more sustainable & free of shenannigans since (like email) it’s an open standard. If an app goes bad, ditch the app. If a service provider goes bad, switch service providers. It avoids everyone having to chg platforms. Since users /can/ switch like that it keeps the services somewhat in line, which in turn reduces the likeliness of needing to change.

@Mirk0dex @rs1linuxtools One pitfall w/OMEMO is servers & apps are gitchy & whenever anything goes wrong a bogus error is sent to users saying “You received a message encrypted with OMEMO but your client doesn't support OMEMO”. Normies are lost as it is so I hope the various servers & apps fix that soon. If you have a fragile user who is on the edge of throwing their devices out the window XMPP is dicey

@Mirk0dexI don't like (much) having to say: “I fucking told you”.> hearing that about Signal really makes me sad. I've always enjoyed using and promoting it (by forcing my friends to install it), but now I have to move away from it.But this is exactly what I said would happen to all those lemmings who fell for another one of Mike Benham's cons.Just go for #XMPP. I've been on it for twenty-odd years. Applications have come and go, but I still have the same account and some of the same contacts since 2005 (I switched accounts once). Only #email has been more stable so far (same account since mid-90s).The only thing that XMPP might be missing is a standardised account migration mechanism (there's a draft in there somewhere).@koherecoWatchdog @rs1linuxtools
