I asked my wife to put together an absolute pain scale after she experienced max pain:10: nerve pain, organ failure/dystention9: child birth8: deep gash (I assume broken bone), joint dislocations, IBS cramps7: severe sprains. Period cramps.6: stubbing your toe, deep bruising5: most sun burns, deep scrapes, deep paper cuts4: skinned knee, light bruises3: mild sunburn2: small insect bite that you don't even notice at first1: being hugged too hard, normal digestion squeezes

@urusan I'd add severe gas bloating or decompression past the Armstrong limit quite near the top as well.

I asked her to keep it to just pain she's personally experienced, hence the comment about broken bones probably being an 8.Also, a 9 for child birth is without an epidural. She also commented that 9 is the peak, so childbirth isn't a constant 9.

What's the maximum pain on an absolute scale that you have experienced?

@urusan I once had a colonoscopy without anesthesia, and I would rate it at about a 6-7 range. It was probably almost as bad as my 3rd case of food poisoning but only lasted for the procedure so overall food poisoning was worse because I was also homeless at the time and living in my car so I wasn't even sure if I would survive or not

@urusan Where does having your eardrum try to explode because your sinuses are plugged during a severe barometric pressure change fit in? (I don't know if it was actually going to. But holy hell did it feel like it)

@RL_Dane @GreySleeves They actually only give you sedation for a colonoscopy. It's actually worth considering skipping the sedation if you have a high pain tolerance. I have done dental surgery without sedation, though in that case they also provide local anesthesia. It's much faster and you can drive home yourself.

@urusan @RL_Dane I was also a fairly new nurse working in that same hospital at the time, so I figured it would be educational for me to see what was goin on all up in there.

@GreySleeves @urusan Do they add the amnesia medicine to the sedation, or do you just feel all the pain and remember it, but are chill so you don't grab the doctors by the throat? That sounds bloody terrifying!

@RL_Dane @GreySleeves Yeah probably. As far as we're aware the kind of sedation they give for a colonoscopy doesn't disrupt consciousness, and you can accurately follow directions under light sedation. They only give you this kind of sedation for procedures you could handle without it, if the pain is too extreme then you get anesthesia.

@RL_Dane @GreySleeves To answer your question, there's not an added amnesia drug, the substance that causes the sedation also disrupts the formation of new memories...while also making you chill so the doctors can easily control you during the procedure.
