@coffeegang such vague … #privacy focused content or private instances? I stumbled across a few instance names that sounded like they focused on privacy issues but didn’t sign up. Figured there’d be some overlap on fosstodon. Course, I don’t spend much time on fosstodon anymore either so … 🤷🏾‍♀️

@fyrfli For sure, misskey.io (the official Misskey instance) is not private. It contacts Google and Cloudflare on the homepage.

@coffeegang I think most instances are "private," as long as you trust the admin and the moderation. By default, Mastodon doesn't have any trackers or targeted ads, which are the reason most websites can't be considered "private."

@oh @coffeegang You can trust it even more if you're the admin (I am not, unfortunately)

@coffeegang There is one exception to that, which are the link previews. I think those cause your browser to leak metadata to the previewed site, but I'm not sure.

@coffeegang Any instance still has the potential to collect metadata, and there's no way to verify if they do or don't. If you want to get around that, use the Tor Browser with the mstdn.social onion site.
