Boosts appreciated. For people interested in #FOSS and #linux, what communication platform do you like most?

@devinprater seeing that a project uses discord immediately tells me that it doesn't share my values or take user empowerment seriously

@devinprater I alternate between Discord and Telegram a lot depending what my customers use. Discord has a very decent screen sharing which is very nice when giving lectures, Telegram is simple and relatively secure for sending credentials to people who tend to break their things a lotI know that Discord is very controversial but most competitors are lacklustre in one meaningful way or another. If Discord had toggle-able encryption and was open-source it would be perfection

@devinprater that's if Discourse (the company) hosts it for you. I opened a VPS and am running it for free but pay the cost of the server ($10 a month). There's also www.discoursehosting.com that will host it for you at $20 a month. Since it's FOSS you could even run it from an old computer at home as a server.

There's also www.discoursehosting.com that will host it for you at $20 a month (like mast.host). Since it's FOSS you could even run it from an old computer at home as a server. I like it because it's easy to modify the layout and function.

@dr Hmm, I'd need a domain though right? And... I can't forward ports.

@devinprater discoursehosting.com supplies domain but hosting yourself does require a domain name. I used them first to experiment then opened my own (they also offer free trial). I'm still learning how to tweak it before I launch it fully. I don't know about the ports.

@devinprater I cannot STAND Matrix clients, but as the rocketchat thing was just mentioned in a thread, MAYBE there will be one that is not weechat that is usable now.(I'd rather just do xmpp to be honest (: But yeah, likely, a bridge type thing is gonna be best cuz xkcd 1782 ("2004: our team stays in touch over irc; 2010: Our team mainly uses Skype, but some of us prefer to stick to irc; 2017: "We've got almost everyone on slack, but three people refuse to quit irc and connect via gateway"; 2051 "All consciousnesses have merged with the glaactic singularity, except for ONE guy who insists on joining through his irc client. "I just have it set up the way I want, okay?" [sigh]" (tooltip: 2078: He announces that he's finally making the jump from screen+irssi to tmux+weechat.)

So for those that chose XMPP, DeltaChat, Rocket, ETC. How do you feel about Matrix? Is it good enough? Is it a dealbreaker? Does it depend on the project?

@devinprater > how do you feel about matrixits the answer that i didnt ask for. xmpp has been on a roll lately, and just works in my experience after setting it up, without hogging ram on my clients and server. omemo in group chats is still a meme (done it with 30+ participants), but one on one is alright. matrix may be shiny, but so can a turd become with golden spray paint.for software projects, id go for publicly browsable mailing lists, issue trackers and irc instead of platforms that lock everything behind the shady company like discord (asking for phone numbers to verify your account to some american company is generally a no for me)
