Man, I love @pixelfed, but it's seriously bad for my self-esteem. Every time I feel like I might not be half bad at that whole ""photography" thing, I just browse the timeline and realize just how talented people out there are. I'm "good" at photography like a first grader is a "good" artist.

@mike @pixelfed As long as you enjoy yourself, photography doen't have to be perfectly professional to be meaningful to you!

@Anachron The crazy thing is, I'm not sure if some of these shots that are so amazing and look spontaneous are ACTUALLY spontaneous, or whether the person taking them worked really hard to appear as if they were just in the right place at the right time. A friend of mine loves doing time lapse photography and I know she does hundreds or thousands of shots for every one she uses. She also does lots of work and research to setup her shots. I just take pictures of stuff I think looks cool.

@mike based on personal experience most are "staged", but some authentic still exist. It's an art to make it look spontaneous, and many have perfected it. There are a lot of different photographs on unsplash.com, from beginner to professional. You can check the metadata/description on the pictures to see which camera, lens and equipment they used. On a sidenote: I love taking photos as well. Out of my 20k+ pictures I took the last 10 years, maybe a few hundred of them are worthy for unsplash.

@Anachron I just spend 8 days in one of the most picturesque places on the globe, and I'm not sure one of the pictures I took is worthy. I felt pretty good about them at the time though.

@mike don't feel bad about it though,- good pictures take a lot of tries in the beginning. The biggest mistake people make is taking too few pictures. Also for me the experience I have when making pictures is more worth than having a perfect picture. When I take a look at the picture I remember what I felt back then, nobody can take that away from me.I guess what I'm trying to say: Enjoy taking pictures! The rest will come naturally.

@mike personally I'd concentrate on producing pictures you yourself are happy with and finding "your style". Others' work is a great inspiration but shouldn't hold you back.@pixelfed

@mike @pixelfed I used to do solo photowalks, just shooting stuff around town. It's a great way to get out, and yeah, sometimes I'd come home with no shots I liked that much, then the next time I might come home with 3 awesome shots. Those are the ones that make it all worth it. Nobody shoots "great" shots (whatever that might be) all the time, key is to keep taking shots, and eventually you get a nice collection.
