What is the general thought on airplane seat reclining? I realize that this is a super first world problem, but after just getting off a 5+ hour flight it's on my mind. I'm a fairly decently sized guy. 6'1 and 250+. As soon as allowed, the slightly built young woman who was sitting in front of me reclined her seat all the way back, putting the back of her head about 6" from my face. She then spent most of the flight leaning forward to see the TV screen on the back of the seat in front of her.

@mike I understand its a big no no unless they reduce the lighting, ir night time when one should be sleeping.Certainly unpleasant to have the person in front of you do so in this day of tiny space allowances in cattle class :(

@mike People that recline their seats in airplanes are the same twats that drive 66 in the fast lane and refuse to pull over even after they've been passed by multiple irate drivers. We can't eradicate them by force unfortunately. People get squirrelly about that kind of thing. Me, being of same stature-ish as you, I offer to buy them a drink if they'll keep their seat up. If they decline, I kick the seat softly every 10-15 seconds. Throw a couple of knees. Whatever it takes.

@mike It always feels as though I should be providing them with a dental checkup.

@mike I think reclining is uncouth for flights under about 3 hours or so, but for long flights it should be the norm that everybody reclines.

@mike I was once on a flight where a tall, elderly gentleman had the person in front of him recline. He complained it was hurting him, out loud, and continually until the cabin staff gave him another seat.My non-confrontational preference would be to sit there in silence, but I'm only 5' 11". (My worst experience was when I was trying to do some work and the person in front reclined so quickly, they almost trapped my laptop.)

@mikeI file it under the same behavior as people who let their kids kick the back of your seat or run up and down the aisle.Personally I don't know why the seats are designed to recline that far. I board a flight and I'm often snoring before the attendants have finished the safety brief.

@mike I've never understood the seat reclining myself. There is no in-between for me: either I can somehow lean my head against the window just right to fall asleep, or I need to be nearly horizontal, the latter of which isn't happening in my lifetime, on my budget, on airlines. It seems that the golden rule of flying is, "pretend everything is about you". So, taking that to it's logical conclusion, I would have turned my music up load and maybe bumped the seat rather aggressively a few times

@mike I'm built the same as you exactly. I honestly don't usually recline my own seat since I am thinking, the person behind me will hate if I do this...

@mike The solution is to just recline your own seat ;) But this, complaining about this is the definition of a first world problem IMO. However, that doesn't mean it can be irritating! I myself hate it when people play games or other touch heavy activity on the touch screen on the back of the headrest. Every touch is a knock on your headrest. A game of Backgammon on the row behind you cal feel like an eternity.

@mikeI used to travel all the time, top tier of American and Delta frequent flyer programs at the same time. I usually didn't fly unless I could sit in first class, front row for this very reason. I flew so much I had upgrade stickers coming out of my ears. Also, getting on and off the plane was much easier. Now I hate flying. I've only flown once round trip since 1998.
