I wonder if overwriting a disk with random data before setting up an encrypted filesystem is really necessary.Sure, the adversary can tell what's encrypted and what isn't if not overwritten. But the ciphertext is still useless without the secret key. What are your thoughts?

@atoponce who's your adversary? Do they have a history of using this kind of data?

Are you really that important to worry about having your data stolen? If you have enemies that big, they will get into your hard drive anyway.

@atoponce strongly encrypted drives should be fine so long as the key is destroyed/unrecoverable. It doesn’t hurt to also overwrite, though

@atoponce SSD or HDD? Check the different requirements and limitations. Good luck!

@atoponce only use case for filling with random data would be if you want to hide a second system partition for plausible deniability.
