As you know, I use SourceHut as the platform for Husky development (and other projects).@amolith provided me an email address a long time ago (thank you again, man :BlobhajHugFullBody:) that I use to send emails. And not only for SourceHut, but also for a public email (https://adol.pw/contact).If you happen to find looking for an email provider for contributing to SourceHut projects or to have a public email address:https://mailbox.orghttps://migadu.comOr, if you're looking for a free provider:https://fedora.email--Those are only a few, there are more, but the important part is the client (plaintext and width-wrapped to 72 characteres are the mail etiquette by default). There, I can recommend:(neo)mutt + emacs/vim/vscodiumClaws MailThunderbird(The last two should allow you to setup that kind of configuration, although I don't know if it's in the client itself or by account).Hope this helps somehow :ablobwave:

@sarvo @captainepoch that's just one folder. All is good. The only thing I can recommend is switch akonadi backend to sqlite, if you haven't already. Not that it's necessary, but makes backing up stuff a bit easier.

@captainepoch yeah, it does not really matter for normal users, i just thought it's worth mentioning.so then you'd have:- posteo.de: no custom domains- migadu.com: only custom domains- mailbox.org: both๐

@cregox @schrofi > both of which seem quite underestimated. They're not, it's just that people prefer to use "free" stuff rather than paying for a service that it's offered as free at other providers.

@cregox @captainepoch oh yeah i meant mail, not webmail ๐คฆmigadu looks like a very nice provider, it's certainly my fallback option should mailbox.org fail. i'm using the contact and calendar sync from mailbox, though, so i'd also need to find replacements for those ๐

@schrofi @captainepoch dav. i live #mobileonly and so i mean davx5 app. but just look for WebDAV in general, for syncing calendar and contacts outside of such providers.

@cregox @captainepoch i'm already using davx5 to sync them. mailbox offers carddav and caldav on top of mail, which is very convenient ๐
don't know if there are any card/caldav providers so that you can get it separate from your mail. what are you using?

@captainepoch @cregox selfhosting is of course also a valid option as always ๐though i'm not sure if i trust myself enough to take care of syncing my calendar and keeping proper backups. i got appointments years in the future and it would be really bad if i lost those ๐ฌ

@cregox @schrofi I self-host a ton of stuff and it's not that difficult to make backups, to be honest.A cronjob with a bash script that makes a .tgz and copies it to an external USB or something. It takes literally 5 minutes of your time to do it.

@captainepoch @cregox i used to selfhost more things, but i tend to make my setup more minimal and only selfhost what's truely necessary and easily maintainable.the complexity of backups really depends on the software you're trying to backup. e.g. once you get into sql databases (except sqlite) you need to spend some time to create a proper backup script and even more to actually test restoring your backup once you're done. so start from a base system, install everything from scratch and try to restore.additionally, you need to spend time to keep everything up to date and do necessary migrations, especially when you're opening up ports on your home ip (which i'd strongly advise against either way, it's better to use zerotier or some vpn).for me it's not worth the hassle most of the time, when there are better commercial alternatives that know their shit ๐

@schrofi @cregox I already did all of that and I don't self-host certain things. Also, I have a backup procedure already in place, well tested (because I break things and had to restore stuff more than once). It just took 1 week of my tome to do all of that and it's been 3 years or so :comfy:

@captainepoch @schrofi fire hazards. solar storms. too much that can go wrong.on a side note: 5 literal minutes for your level of expertise still sound like a huge amount of daily time to me. and i would take much more, in my current circumstance.

@cregox @schrofi If a fire hazard or a solar storm happen by chance I can tell you I would onlye care for one thing: keep my family and myself safe, the rest of material stuff is completly irrelevant.A meteorite also can happen, and it applies the same.> a huge amount of daily time to meIt is not. I'm proficient doing stuff, specially stuff I care about. > in my current circumstance. You're the only putting obstacles in your life because you want to stay on a mobile phone. @captainepoch @cregox 1 week's a bit more than 5 minutes, isn't it? ๐ it's totally fine if you enjoy it and do it as some kind of hobby, but it is certainly not the best option for people that do not like to take care of these things.i still remember when i selfhosted seafile and wanted to test my backup and couldn't get seafile working on the "newer" version of python2 provided on my fresh debian install. it was hell ๐ considering the amount of time needed for these kind of things, it's not even worth it in terms of monetary value, to be honest.

@schrofi @cregox > 1 week's a bit more than 5 minutes, isn't it? It is, because that's when I started from scratch, it's obvious it took more time than doing that simple script for backups :comfy: > but it is certainly not the best option for people that do not like to take care of these things.Yes, of course, you're 100% right here.I do it because it doesn't take too much time of my life and I have everything automated with email reports, if something fails I get a report and I can go and fix it in no time :comfy:

@captainepoch @cregox > It is, because that's when I started from scratch, it's obvious it took more time than doing that simple script for backups :comfy:yeah, but the problem with backups is that you need to completely trust them. so you can't really skip the other steps, like verifying the backup, so it will take a bit of your time.> I do it because it doesn't take too much time of my life and I have everything automated with email reports, ...once you're there you've probably already invested enough so that it is sustainable. then it makes sense to keep going ๐
