Idea... 💡 🚲 People ask, but how do we get from city to city with a bike? What about something like this....Within a city people can bike everywhere but on the edge of the city there are "bike-busses" or "bike-trains" where you can simple ride on sit for a while and getting transported to another city. When getting to the other city simply ride your bike off the bus/train and move to the other city etc, etc! Only works when a number of people would do this ofc but if proven much more effective, faster, better for the planet and a lot cheaper.. We can even laugh harder at cars! #FuckCars

@stux I've done the bike-train one few times (it's a possibility in France for at least some if not all regional trains), it's pretty neat.

@stux I do this all the time.Hop on bike, get on Metro, hop off metro, get on Train. Boom, in city now. Then bike to destination.Mind you: only some types of bikes are allowed, at some non busy times and you have to pay extra. But since my PT (Public Transport) is paid by the government, I can do that for basically free as long as I get to have my diploma in the end.

@stux while in the UK they removed the guards vans in trains, reduced the number of bikes each train can carry, and banned bikes on trains completely at some times of day

@stux Alternative solution: Ride a bus, train, whatever to the other city as normal, no bike required

@stux Or, as an alternative, create a nationwide bikesharing infrastructure in cities. A short interaction with an app and the bike is unlocked for you.

@stux wouldn't a cheaper version of the 'OVfiets" be better? You just rent a cheap bike at your last busstop or train station, instead of making space in the train to transport all the bicycles.

@stux Sounds pretty good, and if you have an electric bike you could charge it on the way.I dream of a day when all inner cities are car free, like in Zermatt, Switzerland.

@stuxsome trains (high speed and low speed) , buses and tram are proposing this. but yeah, we definitely need more secured infra for biking, out of the way of motor and stop producing ICE cars.easing ways for alternatives, and modal report

@stux Many of our university students bring their bikes on the Tide light rail. I take the Tide to in-town events when service covers the event hours. A day-pass is competitive with event parking and no hunting for a car-park & space. Still can’t take the #Greyhounds on the HR-Tide light rail.

@stux I want the connection between cities to be safe for cyclists. I have no interest in going into cities, especially during a pandemic. Cycling is faster than trains, depending on the city.

@stux You know, I'm always amazed about how people centric towns and cities are in the netherlands, and I'm always super excited to see how things will progress and develop with them in the future. I just wish that more countries followed that model! Actually thinking about how to make towns and cities more liveable and enjoyable.

@stux I hope that one day the US will evolve into a civilized society that values healthy, safe, peaceful transportation. I guess while I'm hoping I'll also hope we melt all the guns into wind turbines and solar panels. Then maybe we could start taking care of sick people. So much to do here to catch up with the civilized societies.

@stuxI'm happy to see more people talking about these things and trying to improve our world. I think @tio has written a book about this transportation issue, but I haven't read it yet. Anyway, if you're interested you can read all his books for free at https://tromsite.com/books

@stux I would love to have proper bike rentals everywhere, so I don't have to hazel with transporting my bike through stations and trains. Also I wouldn't need to waste space in trains for the bike.

@stux it’s nice that NS has the ability to take bikes, but the bike surcharge feels high for regular use. Folding bikes are nice, but I’m not sure the return on investment is there;)

@stuxBetter to have the bus/train stop near where you are leaving if you are in a hurry. Bike shares are also a great option
