@s8n @josh budgets. they don't pay a fleet of animators to draw frames anymore. so they use something like toonboom to auto-tween as much as possible.

@josh The reason, as I understand, is that Eastern Animation was done in service of the state, and with a censure’s pen involved, but allowed a greater degree of creative freedom in a piece of televised media as there was no profit motive behind the work. Smaller local teams rather than international ones also meant that the directors and creators both had to do more than drawing key-frames, and could do basically whatever they liked as long as it served as a vehicle for socialist ideals. This resulted in a lot of slightly uncanny work, that blended together style and time-saving techniques.

@josh If you’re interested in seeing something that really sits at the top of Eastern European animation, you should look into the work of Yuri Norestein. @josh If you got the time, you should check out a film that came out a few years back from the czech republic titled Laika. It's stop motion animation and fairly damn good.
