Sometimes I'm not sure what is worse: People thinking that "Mastodon" is mastodon.social, or people thinking "The Fediverse" is Mastodon.People thinking "The Fediverse" is mastodon.social?

@Johann150 I don't get this obsession with telling people that Mastodon is not the Fediverse. People will learn in time on their own. It's not productive to bombard them with so much information or they'll inevitably suffer from choice paralysis.

@dusnm oh yeah it's this argument again, it comes up every time. But that doesn't make it any better. If I may exercise this argument of yours a bit further, we should call email just Gmail, shouldn't call it a search engine just call it a Google. Don't call it an operating system, it's a Windows. Don't call it a smartphone, it's an iPhone. It wouldn't cost an arm and a leg to mention a single other fediverse software on joinmastodon, many others mention at least three others on their website.

@Johann150 I respectfully disagree with the analogy. Those other terms are already deeply embedded into the public consciousness. Mastodon, on the other hand, is not. The Fediverse suffers from the same problem Linux has. There's too many choices. And like I always direct new users to Ubuntu I always direct birdsite refugees to Mastodon. It's simply the most sane default. In time people will learn about Pleroma, Misskey, Pixelfed and all the others.

@dusnm I know enough people (especially older/elderly) that non-ironically actually do those things I mentioned and I think it's terrible. I wouldn't say these terms are not deeply embedded in public consciousness.I'm not saying that you should scream at people about this when they first hear about the frdiverse, but mentioning it at some point would be a good idea. But Mastodon doesn't do that.

@Johann150 Why would Mastodon as a project do that? The ideal scenario is that you'd encounter people from other instances and indeed software other that Mastodon, but you'd never need to know that. That's the idea at least.

@Johann150 That's to say that it shouldn't matter that I'm on Mastodon and you're on Pleroma as long as we can communicate seamlessly. Abstract away the federation and hide it as you'd encapsulate implementation details inside a class.

@dusnm we can't communicate seamlessly though. The issue being that Mastodon controls more than half of all fediverse servers according to https://fediverse.observer/stats and Mastodon is surely well aware of it. Any discussion of activitypub will eventually end up at "will Mastodon support/approve it".I can't communicate seamlessly with you because misskey or pleroma emoji reactions won't show up on Mastodon for one example.

@Johann150 I can understand that Eugen wants to be in control of his own project. The solution is to have an independent entity standardize ActivityPub and that all implementations adhere to the standard.

@dusnm if you think that activitypub is standardized by Mastodon this perfectly illustrates my issue. Because the w3c is the standards body. but you know who introduced webfinger into the mix? Mastodon

@Johann150 I don't think that. On a side note, are Emoji reactions part of ActivityPub?

@dusnm ActivityPub or more specifically ActivityStreams uses JSON-LD as the underlying format, intentionally to be extensible. Mastodon also takes advantage of this. But adding e.g. HTTP signatures goes outside that kind of extensibility. Mastodon decided to use some specific version of an RFC draft (which is now obsolete) for this and now everyone else is stuck with it because Mastodon is so large that you need interoperability to be viable as another ActivityPub implementation.
