i *think* i could do websites and apps that would have helped my mental health better than what was on offer for me.lots of people giving you bad advice on Google. took me years to find the good stuff. and that stuff isn't really very complicated. some of it is stuff elderly people know, but aren't good at articulating. or they're not on the Internet to explain it.

@m hm, it might have to be very varied, and toward many different target audiences, because people have so many different starting points. many ways of dressing up their feelings, you might say. i'm thinking here. i didn't make a decision yet, but there's a general idea of how one might help people in despair.

@thor Then if you think it will help, you should absolutely do it.

@m the guy who wrote Eliza, a program that emulates a Rogerian therapist, tested it out on a secretary in his office.http://psych.fullerton.edu/mbirnbaum/psych101/eliza.htmand after typing to it for a while, she said "can you please leave the room?"she wanted to talk to the computer in private.

@thor I have heard that story, but I thought it was just apocryphal. There's work ongoing on AI chatbots which are significantly more complex than Eliza, but my Google-fu is weak https://www.opencolleges.edu.au/blog/2019/04/10/australians-shy-away-from-virtual-ai-psychology/

@m much of the language surrounding therapy carries associations with women. but suicide rates are higher in men. i think offerings for them aren't as good. and men, including me at one point, will not want "therapy". but they might want a "pep talk" or a "core muscle workout".

@thor I think CBT is quite masculine. It gives you things to do, rather than things to ponder.

@m personally i needed ACT more than CBT. acceptance and commitment therapy. it's based on CBT but takes more of a "yes, it sucks, and it will have to suck for the moment, but what will you do about it" approach.

@m ACT is more explicit about the "intervene with behaviour too" part, which is useful if one of your problems is that you're a bit lazy/avoidant.
