I have set myself the goal to not call up the youtube.com website at least not manually. I wrote a quick script that I called "mpv-play" which just pipes the clipboard contents into mpv and plays it, and now I can right click anything in my RSS Feed and just watch it straight away without being exposed to any recommendations!

@metalune sounds like what i do with feeder and newpipe. Newpipe is set to background play by default and feeder opens yt links in newpipe when clicked

@metalune I have recently started adding RSS feeds from an invidious instance instead of youtube itself. As for viewing videos, I have been using a macro on newsboat that launches mpv to watch a video.

@jason123santa yeah it's more about privacy, not becoming addicted to YouTube again and less about the old computer thing because my computer is pretty darn fast actually

@getimiskon hmm the thing about invidious for me is that Invidious instances are just banned wayy too often for my liking

@metalune yeah most computers are fast enough just saying that it would be good for a cli only workflow on an old computer

@metalune AFAIK mpv uses youtube-dl, but Youtube throttles it. For this, it is recommended to use the yt-dlp fork instead, which works around somehow. Is this info obsolete or still relevant?

@metalune for a less techy version of this: #FeedMail which sends me an email when a channel posts a video. Then I click the link to open in #mpv or #newpipe if I'm on mobile.

@birnim @metalune Is there even a way to make MPV using yt-dlp

@jason123santa @metalune just rename the yt-dlp to youtube-dl. making a symlink should also work I think.

@metalune nice initiative! I played around with the idea too a few years ago using good ol' #zenity and some bash-fu. Then #invidious came in and I got lazy lol. Perhaps I should pick up the project again, re-write it in C or something.Suggestion: how about a command-line searching utility? Some #searx instances allow you to get results as RSS or JSON. If you could query `site:youtube.com %s` and scrape the results, bam: entirely self-contained #cli solution!

@kzimmermann well, but why though? No need to use a search if I don't search on YouTube anyways, I get everything I need through my RSS Feed
