I think smartphones peaked in 2016 for me.I was able to get a flagship Samsung S7 that had a 1440p screen. A heart rate monitor built in, and you could utilize gear vr to get a nice taste of the VR experience. That phone cost $650.Now you have buy a Samsung Ultra phone for $1200 to get a 1440p screen. But it has no heart rate monitor since thats only available on their smartwatches now. And gear vr was discontinued, due to facebook owning oculus.#technology #smartphones

To be fair, most ppl dont need any of the above as they mainly use it for browsing the web, taking photos, and using social media apps. But its still crazy to think about all the features that were lost for that price point. The major useful improvement since has been fast 30w charging. But otherwise the experience is the same for most people.

@geotechland i am trying to pay less for phones and maintain the batteries longer. So i bought my most recent device used in mint condition for $250 and have so far owned it for 8 months. It is now almost a year and a half old and my battery maintainence seems to be working so far. I use an app that tells me to charge at 30% and unplug at 80%. That last 20% charge does major damage to batteries

@geotechland I think the same. Personally no need for a heart rate sensor in the smartphone but 1440px wide is a must. Probably having to buy an used one, like the Galaxy S22 Ultra at end of 2022 or begin of 2023. The S21 Ultra is currently at about 800 €. My used-like-new Note 9 was at ~600 € a 3/4 year after release.

@shortwavesurfer2009 all good charging tips.Thats my approach also. To not spend more than $500 on a phone, try to use it for 3+ years, replace the battery to extend the lifetime. Is it still somewhat difficult to replace the battery on android phones?Apple seems to have an easy way to replace the batteries on their phones since you can walk into any store, and they provide software support for many years.

@geotechland Having totally the same vibes. Still looking for a suitable replacement for my 2014 Oneplus One.Guess people can call me "old" now, as I complain about several aspects of new phones that don't suit me xDWould really appreciate a battery-manufactury who build replacement-stuff on demand. I give them dimensions, maybe the old battery controller and they build me fresh cells for 40-50€Would totally buy.

@geotechland iPhone 5S was probably the peak for me. I haven’t had a single device since then that I’ve liked nearly as much. I believe that came out in 2013.

@mike yeah around that time was peak iphone too.Especially since the iphone 6s is capable of running ios 15.Though you are missing out on usb type c and fast charging.

@mstern I'd say go for a mid range oneplus phone whenever you need a replacement. But replacing the battery might be a bit of a hassle.

@frumble I kind of miss the heart rate because i remember going for a jog and using my phone to measure my heart rate felt so cool hahaBut yeah not needed. I'd prefer a 1440p display over 90 or 120hz.But could live with a 1080p since most video content i consume is still at 1080p.

@geotechland But a higher refresh rate is no contradiction to QHD. My Galaxy Tab S7+ has an even higher resolution with 120 Hz. The Galaxy S22 Ultra has QHD+ with 120 Hz too.I want a QHD screen on my phone primary for text clarity.

@geotechland @mstern Batteries need replacing but phone manufacturers make phone that can't be easily opened, if at all. They want you to buy new phones.I miss my LG G3 where I had a stack of batteries.I don't need flagship features and though I own a OnePlus 8T my daily driver is a lowly Moto G5 Plus. I recently got a Teracube 2e that ticks most of the boxes (removable battery, headphone jack, microSD slot, FM radio) and midrange.Googobs of money for features I don't need makes no sense.

@marcdw @geotechland I want see ONE single battery company, that builds the powercell I give them dimensions for. Today it is really hard to keep using good phones after more than 4 years as nobody builds batteries after that time 😅 I am totally frustrated about this 😤

@mstern @marcdw That would be really expensive though to design batteries with different dimensions.I'd rather just be able to easily get a battery replaced that is standardized.

@marcdw @mstern I like the teracube but don't think it's midrange quality. More like budget. But how's the camera and charging speeds?

@geotechland @mstern Ah yes, budget is more accurate. So far it seems a bit "laggy" compared to my other phones, no matter how old.Charging time seems fairly quick but I'll have to time it next time I do a full charge. It doesn't come with a charger so I've been using the one from an Axon 7. Doesn't work with the OnePlus 8 charger.Camera I can't say. Never had an interest in snapping pics so phone cameras have never been a concern or issue. Currently OpenCamera is installed.
