Since I'm fairly new here, I get asked a lot about how I discovered this place, what brought me to Pleroma in particular, how I got to learn about it, ...But then I do wonder: what about all of you? (including the people here who might've been here since the identi.ca days, or wrote their own fediverse software)How long have you been on here? How did you discover it?What made you join/stay?What brought you to the specific software you're using, and why this instance (or why self-hosting)?I want to know!

@helene Got invited by a friend on her instance, and since I was never the kind to be active on social networks or just any kind of online community, this was a first to me in many ways. I started on plerhomo, still on it. I started self hosting about over 2 years ago, because I wanted to unsmooth my brain by learning more server related stuff. Turns out, a major instance you most likely don't know closed down about at the same time as I was setting up mine so I got a decent amount of people here quite early on, and I wasn't ready for this stress so early on, I thought I'd have the time to just tweak and break stuff as I wish.. but that's not how it went lol I'm still happy with how it's been going so far

@helene i've been here since the libre.fm (2008?) days, because i *loathe* the RIAA but also used last.fm/audioscrobbler before it. I'm not sure how I got onto audioscrobbler...i think it was just a natural consequence of trying to find places to promote my music and make it as a musician.in the identi.ca days i joined, and tried for awhile to think of a reason to *be* here since i was for years the only one i knew who used it other than the fsf (and they had lots of means of getting their voice out). Eventually I settled on documenting how far from baseline reality my world got. I just treated it as just-another-platform until quitterby the time quitter came along it was clear to me that centralized social media platforms were starting to be problematic, i started trying to get *other* people to join around that timesomething happened on niu.moe that made me start looking for a new instance, and @Moon and i were already mutuals by that point, and he offered me an account and i took it. this became my main account 5 months ago when mamot.fr threatened to censor my account due to telling m.s users about the censorship on their instance

@adam created NAS in ~2017 and I joined that week, I’ve been on fedi in varying levels of engagement since then, and finally started my own instance in 2021 because I didn’t have an instance I could recommend, without reservations, to my autistic libertarian friends who were getting banned from twitter at the time.(I still don’t because I run thebag.social like a retard, but I tried!)Very specifically I was reacting to @mancerayder14 ‘s complaints about the mastodon interface, so I set up pleroma+soapbox and I think it’s a winner for users, shame about the admin here though… 😂

@helene I discovered mastodon via leftist gamedevs and barely used it, and later a lesbian goon showed me her Pleroma instance. That's when I started an instance. Then I met all the wonderful admins running instances banned by the elephants. It was refreshing to see such a wide array of walks of life in the user base. While I'm not affiliated with any intelligence agency, it's nice to be on fedi. :3

@helene joined in August, heard it mentioned by my friend and later saw an ad on 4chan. Lotta smart, fun and funny people here, and you get a lot more interaction than on other social media. Joined Leafposter because it was small and I was Canadian, started self-hosting because figured it's good to further decentralized and it'd be a fun thing to figure out how to do.

@helene Actually i discovered fedi in a very peculiar way. I was reading the blog webpage of PostmarketOS where they had a link to .... lemmy.ml I was using reddit a lot, so I wanted to try it. Then I discovered it is full of tankies, I deleted my account and I searched for other federated services. This happened last summer.

@heleneFellow hackerspace member (which I think used identi.ca) told me about it back in 2013, created an account on loadaverage.orgNot exactly sure why I continuously stayed… I think I quite like it's community, it's much more inter-personal and less performative like what twitter tends to have.Software where my main account got:- Gnu Social- Friendica- Mastodon- PleromaFor Pleroma, the announce of MastoFE on it (~October 2017) and ability to self-host got me interested, mastodon+tweetdeck influence on the interface rather than the much comfier pleroma-fe.

@hector @helene I've been on identi.ca too. Apparently, I migrated there from Twitter when it started corrupting URLs, 13 years ago and stayed until Evan shut it down. Then, I bummed at Twitter for a bit, but it was pretty unbearable and I jumped to GNUsocial as soon as it became viable. My first instance was quitter.se. But it was a terribly communist place, so I migrated to Sea Lion Club. When that one collapsed due to a hardware failure and lack of backups, I set up a personal instance. Pleroma was significantly easier to install and operate than Mastodon at the time, and alternatives like Misskey were not yet mature.

@helene I tried out GNU Social in 2018 but I was younger and didn't know what I was doing and didn't even understand much of how federation worked. I just liked Free software. I only posted like 4 times and that was it.I then tried out Mastodon in 2020 but again, only for a few days and then I quit using it. At this point I at least knew was federation was. Then I got pleroma shilled to me in an IRC channel and I joined poast cuz it was all I knew of (later moving to neckbeard.xyz (later selfhosting)). Here I am now, still on Pleroma.

@helene fun thing:It's my second pleroma instance.social.hacktivis.me which I think I also used as a failed attempt to host friendica, was my first pleroma instance. It died with the SSD of my BananaPi, and only backup was just way too old to be worth restoring. Also on having been there for a serious while, sometimes you miss the old people but they tend to come back once sometimes and it's often fun.

@helene it was around 2019 that I decided to give this microblogging stuff a try, so I made a twitter account, and then abandoned it two-three months later (rip, lmao), so then I decided to try some of these federated social network stuff a try, I first heard about mastodon some times before somewhere in, i don't remember exactly, was it arisuchan (rip) or lainchan or 4chan? One of them was it, probably arisuchan. (To be exact, I first heard about friendica, but I couldn't see anything from it without registering first and I didn't like it in general so I just gave up lol)So I made my first account in niu.moe (rip) in 2019, and my account's name was shuked at first and my pfp was this shark I attached here, and papush called me sharky, and I liked it so much I named most of my other accounts shark! (I have more than 10 accounts on fedi)Then miaourt decides to close down niu forever (rip) for reasons, and that's when I fully moved to this pleroma instance,The end.

@helene was browsing lainchan sometime in 2019 when I saw a thread about alternative forms of social media. There was a post that mentioned social.lainon with no replies or anything, but for some reason it interested me enough to check it out. Then I figured out what the fediverse was. I still find it kinda weird that this post specifically mentioned this instance, might've been Mr. Admin trying to advertise. Don't know when I started posting cute boys but I must have thousands of them on here by now

@helene I've been on fedi somewhere in-between 5-6 years. Initially discovered the concept of federated social media with pump.io, but never made an account. few years later mastodon launched and got relatively popular in my tech spaces so I made an account on mastodon.social. I think the main reasons why I joined was because I was both sick of twitter (and coincidentally I think I had just received my first suspension) and very into free software, so I gave it a try. After having various bad interactions on twitter and receiving my second suspension I gave up on the platform and pushed myself to make an identity on the fediverse. hopped from mastodon.social, then to mstdn.io, then around 6-12 months after pleroma started I stood up an instance on the development branch. my pleroma db is still named pleroma_dev lol

@helene Summer 2020, postgres problem at $JOBLooking for solutions I stumbled over https://blog.soykaf.com/post/postgresql-elixir-troubles/Hmm, interesting blog. Fediverse? OK, whatever…Started to lurk at lain.com, fun stuff there actually, although I have no connection to manga or games. But hey, retrocomputing, economics, aha…Post from a french guy(!) comes by looking for a bull escala: "#JeRecherche un serveur Bull Escala (PPC620). Peu d'espoir, mais je demande quand même, si quelqu'un a ça qui traîne dans une cave..."I have two of them in my kitchen (yes, in my kitchen, had to clean out the cellar.)How can I reply? OK, join fediverse, make an account somewhere, quick.blovice.bahnhof.cz? Registration open? Go. (2021-01-06)Yup, I can reply to the post of the french guy.Went to his account page - he has policy scraping posts older than 6 months, the post where he is looking for the bull escala is no longer there. (Flashback to haunting UUCP adventures from $UNI came back to my mind. So that are those “federation issues”, aha…)OK, post other things, but, hm…Delete account at 2021-05-06Uh, I can still post? Data still there? shrugSo, here I am, a sixty year old guy…

@emilis Known about Mastodon, Pixelfed and *diaspora since 2017. I was introduced by them by @Framasoft @framapiaf.org, as I liked to read their posts and website. Never used them, but I quite liked the ideas. Even more so when Framasoft announced crowdfunding for PeerTube, which I was really hyped about at the time!Things moved on, until around one week before creating my instance. I was talking with a fairly free-software oriented guy, which had just become the new president of a student association. He had created many accounts on proprietary social media platforms, and I just asked him, knowing he was quite a proponent of free software and quite hated proprietary platforms: "Why don't you run a Mastodon instance for it?"He told me "Why not? As long as people use the network, really, but I doubt many do considering they're mostly using Discord and Instagram anyway"; to which he swiftly added "And it wouldn't be Mastodon, I prefer Pleroma anyway, it's lighter."He had a point on the audience part, and now I was curious about Pleroma, so I looked it up and it just seemed to perfectly match what I wanted, on the software points and social part, too! It just, appealed very much to me!!But none of the instances suggested by the pleroma.social seemed to quite fit me (and I don't think any really would); but I really wanted to check it out, even though I never was much of a social network person. So I tried my hardest to run an instance even with my NAT (thanks Cloudflare for helping me with that!) to try it out. And that's how I came to be, almost two months ago!I later found out the guy in question never ran a Pleroma instance himself, though... or used it at all, and pretty much just had heard from it because of YunoHost and some free software activists from the region. :meowSmirk:

@helene Mergan was browsing the lands of the four-leafed clovers, specifically on the fields where technology is discussed upon, when they happened to stumble upon a gilded thread that when followed, led to a completely different territory-- the chans of F. That be where I learnt about ActivityPub and the Fediverse.A few months later, Mergan decided to make ready and embark upon the Fedi-seas-- though for this they would need a few comrades to tag along; and to convince them to join on the adventure, Mergan chose Friendica as the first vessel-type.Unfortunately, this endeavor did not last long, since the main feature was broken-- federation; and me comrades found too, the methods of interaction with Friendica were vastly tedious. A false start, but with a new vessel of the Pleroma class we set a-sail once more. And that brings us to today. So that'd be Friendica on January of '22, and Pleroma on February of '22.Mergan always wanted to be self-hosted, so they could make their own rules-- and still be able to interact with others. This be a perfect fit so far.Aye :catbop:

@heleneI used to have an account on identi.ca but never liked proper micro-blogging. I joined because toxic corporation vs. FOSS was always appealing to me and I must have read about it on websites about FOSS. Ended up on Mastodon just because it works fine for my use. I have an account on Pixelfed, but don't use it.Self-hosting isn't among my priorities.

@helene >How long have you been on here?A year an a half, of that ~10 months on my own instance. >How did you discover it?A few threads on /g/. One of them linked to a list of instances, one of these fediblock lists, so I was like fuck it not like I have anything better to do (keep in mint that was January 2021 so lockdowns and all that shit). Ended uo joining Paypig because it was listed as "unmoderated" and "not ToS", also the name sounded kind of interesting. Stayed there untill May when Grumbulon invited me to FCE where I stayed untill I decided to start my own instance in late July. As to why running my own instance, at first it was just to see if I can do it, later decided to stick with it for multiple reasons, main one being not having to worry about instance admin(s) interfering with federation (blocking other users/instances, various kinds of rate limiting, anti hellthread MRFs etc). Also the fact that I can do whatever the fuck I want with configuration. I mean just looks at my frontend, you don't get this on someone else's instance, also find me an instance that has :dog_sex_vomit: emoji, I'll wait lmao. Why Pleroma? Well mostly because it can run fine (most of the time) on a low spec servers like mine

@helene I've actually been here since quite a while I actually spawned back in the statusnet days or gnu/social or whatever the f that old pile of php junk was called, idk why I joined back then its mostly cause i'm an internet kid who used to be really into free software and shit like thatI really got into it back in the mastodon days I guess I was on some mastodon instance then one day I made a pleroma instance don't rember why I chose plerome but i don't regret my choice since it look like the best fedi software out therei actually don't know why I'm staying here I basically have nobody here, I never really got along with people here never found people like me don't know if they even exist, I used to have one friend but who had really different opinions than me I tried doing my best to make him understand my view tried to open his eyes, I also tried to give him advices on other things like how to take high quality nudes per exemple (cuz his nudes were terrible lmao) but the guy never actually listened or understood one day I snapped and deleted everything (this was at a time short after my instance burned down (ovh strasbourg) and I was a refugee on his instance at the time)few years later I made a new instance and now I'm here again with no followers and almost don't follow anyone and Idk what I'm doing here basicallytl;dr I'm a lonely boi who's here since quite a long time ago and nobody loves me here and I don't love nobody here but i still stay because idk maybe this place feels like home or something or maybe I actually like the idea of having zero followers

@helene I’ve known about fedi for quite some time, but every time I tried it it just didn’t click with me and I was back on Twitter since I was a heavy user there tweeting my whole life until someone irl found my tweets about them and I’ve started to be more careful about what I write. Then it kinda went downhill with some changes I wasn’t fond, too much normies joined, people I liked left, likes instead of favorites, algorithms and ads, etc. And by just googling alternatives I’ve stumbled upon mastodon. The last straw was Elon deal, war/antiwar propaganda overflow and my country banning Twitter, so here I am.I created a new mastodon account on koyu.space a few weeks ago, since I couldn’t remember my last one, then I discovered plemora and that it’s easy to self host and since I work in IT I’ve decided to host my own as a learning experience. Enjoying it so far, but takes too much time :blobcatafternoon:

@helene > How long have you been on here?Around 2016, but was not very active until I quit Twitter in 2018.> How did you discover it?I'd heard about it when it was Diaspora, people would bring it up occasionally, but never paid much attention to it; I just stayed on Twitter and also used Twister ( http://twister.net.co/ ), I'd mine blocks for it. Eventually, on the recommendation of someone interesting on Twitter, I hopped to mastodon.social and when I found out about instance-blocking and that maly.io didn't do it, I hopped there. I stayed mostly inactive until two things happened: the big Alex Jones ban (at the time, I had never listened to his show, but the censorship bothered me) and they killed off the API that let me use Twitter from Bitlbee.> What brought you to the specific software you're using, I didn't want to deploy Rails in my spare time; it had been my day job and even then, I tried to avoid touching Rails. I saw people talking about Pleroma, and I liked it almost immediately.> and why this instance (or why self-hosting)?I like self-hosting in general, I host a lot of stuff out of my house. Especially with fedi, it's nice to self-host: I'm the only person obligated to care about what I post, I can hack on the code, and I figure that if it's going to continue growing, fedi needs more people to run instances. Aside from that, maly.io was a little overburdened, and it seemed like fun.

@helene a friend of mine from Gab was on shitposter.com and asked a few of us to join her there. They didn't like Gablins so we all got kicked off. Didn't think of fedi again for didn't time until some more Gab friends joined FSE so I made an account. As quality people have disappeared from Gab I've spent more time over here. I don't pay any attention to the software behind it.

@helene I was here in the old GNU Social days, in 2012 or so. I used to be on various XMPP mucs about decentralized communications and tried it. I left it after a couple of years tho, cause I lost the interest and the community of these days was kinda monothematic (left politics, mainly from Spain and free software/tech). I returned to Mastodon some years later, cause I was on a forum and some guys started to use it and posting their profiles. These days Pleroma as full stack was young and I eventually hosted my personal instance for some time it. Then I was on various instances of persons that I like so much and trust, like Ivesen, Daya and Rina (kogomi). I don't see myself changing Pleroma cause I like the UI.

@helene I joined in early 2020.When I lived in China, the office adjacent to mine was licensed by the government to censor Sina Weibo. These contracts were given to media companies licensed under the various municipal level Bureaus of Propaganda. Posts flagged by machine review would be given to humans in the office who would respond with ignore, delete, or delete and deploy local police. I knew of associates of friends who were banned from Sina Weibo, disappeared, and beaten, and I never knew whether the guy sitting three meters from me was why. When I saw the first steps to this system being rolled out on US-owned social media, I got the fuck off and deleted all my accounts. I joined a dozen Fediverse instances and began figuring out which I liked and slowly making my own list of people to follow.Last year, when I had a good idea who I wanted to be following to make an interesting feed, I closed all those accounts and started my own server.I stay because there are interesting people saying interesting things, I am in control of my content, and individuals are free to block me if they don’t want to hear from me. Decentralization is interesting, and it will become more and more important as the Internet is tightly government controlled.I tried Mastodon and MissKey, but @graf convinced me that Pleroma was a better idea for my needs. Honestly, they are all about the same for how I use the Fediverse.

@D This is quite a story... Glad you found this place to express yourself, then! Everyone should get the right to speak their thoughts, and no one should be tracked down by a government for their speech, particularly on the Internet. I hope those people are doing alright, still...Congrats on the self-hosted instance, and congrats on making it so far!

@helene mmm yes datamining >How long have you been on here?Since January 2021, I think, although I've took a long hiatus a few months since them before returning with more enthusiasm. Knew about it long before that, but never bothered to take a closer look. That is if you don't count a few less successful ventures (tried random Diaspora server in ~2016 to move small shitposting page of friends from mainstream social media, it sucked in term of features; registered on random jap Mastodon server in ~2017 after someone advertised a project on certain imageboard, didn't have anything to post or say, abandoned; tried to install Pleroma in 2019 for the same group of friends, got overwhelmed in config and dropped the idea).>How did you discover it?Probably /g/, or 8/tech/ if it was still active those days. I did like the technology but avoided using it because of prevous experience as well as having an idea of typical users belonging to certain demographic I'm not fond of.>What made you join/stay?Boredom, I suppose. Joined to try it out, started reading and posting various shit and got hooked on.>What brought you to the specific software you're using, and why this instance (or why self-hosting)?Pleroma is simply the best there is (at least within next month and a half ;) ). It doesn't require a whole dedic, is easily configurable and expandable with MRFs.As for self-hosting, it allowed me to get some webmaster experience, as well as be more independent of moderation decisions. @p, the host of my previous home instance, is alright in my eyes, but he does sometimes get too heavy-handed on those who disrupt him, and that included a few high-quality shitposters I also started to enjoy.

I've been on fediverse for about a year.I actively started seeking out distributed options as an alternative to big tech. The explicit censorship on big tech platforms was the last straw for me. What use is a discussion platform you can't discuss on? I've found fedi way more fun than the sanitized big tech platforms. People get rowdy and sometimes I see something really distasteful, but that's the price of freedom and I'm happy to pay it.I'm using soapbox, lotide, peertube, matrix-conduit, and ejabbered. My ultimate goal is to self-host any services I need via the fbxl network so I'm not asking some big company permission to live my live on their products. Look at the google graveyard: stuff you don't control can be taken away in a heartbeat or changed in ways that don't work for you anymore. The specific software I use I chose for server load, ease of setup and maintenance, and compatibility with one another.

@helene A couple of them are dead, beaten to death on the side of the road by police. Don’t know about the rest. But that’s just life when you have an authoritarian government with absolute power. One of the most valuable thing you learn about social media in China is to screenshot everything. Anything interesting or important can and will be scrubbed. Your only chance to save it is screenshotting and sharing it on encrypted chat. Otherwise, all evidence of abuse dies with the victim.I think people in western countries will need to learn to do this very soon.

@helene I haven’t been on here more than 6 monthsI used to lurk on reddit but the double-standard politics and censorship reminded me of Twitter culture. After Ruqqus died, I searched more for FOSS social media without censorship. Discussions.app was one alternative I was recommended from people who were on Ruqqus. I never made an account on these sites though, I just lurked. Discussions had a stale community & poor interface.Decentralization and federation are the two concepts that drew me here. Once I found FSE, I knew this was exactly what I wanted in social media. It reminds me of a 90s era internet community. No censorship of anything legal, offensive humor is never off limits, and the political focus allows for meaningful discussion of worldviews. Pleroma and Mastodon were debated before I chose Pleroma. It seemed Pleroma had technical merits over Mastodon’s odd restrictions or deficiencies.

@helene > How long have you been on here?Since April 2017. Over 5 yrs already, halp> How did you discover it?I was on FB, but unhappy with many things there. I started to wonder if something floss wouldn't exist and for some reason the idea of having something decentralised also popped in my head. I learned about diaspora, but after trying I didn't stay. The few people I knew on there posted in French and I didn't really find interesting accounts to follow. Later someone wanted to do a project with other IT people and decided to organise an install party to set up a mastodon server, which was getting popular at the time. I was just starting to get more interested in IT, so decided to join the party.> What made you join/stay?I quickly found fun and interesting people. The culture was also so much more open and healthy than on FB. Like people actually talked to each other.> What brought you to the specific software you're using, and why this instance (or why self-hosting)?One thing I liked doing was check out remote instances. I came across a software I didn't know and it looked pretty cool. Later I learned about pleroma and I was pretty sure that the instance I saw was a heavily themed pleroma instance. I was already running yunohost (which I learned about at the install party) and decided I wanted to try install and package it. (The package was never added to ynh, though. By the time I felt confident enough to add it, someone else had already made another package.) I had a lot to learn (like I didn't know what nginx or systemd was and only learned about ssh and nano at the install party, lol), but eventually got ilja.space running in September 2018.

@sj_zero I’m a big fan of xmpp. I don’t know why more people don’t use it. It’s how I communicate with my wife during the day, but I don’t really have any other people using it. It’s hard to get “normies” to use anything other than their SMS or FB Messengers. What have you found to be a good xmpp public server?

I think a big part of it is that the xmpp clients out there vary wildly in quality, and a lot of the first ones you'd head to look exactly like something you'd run in 2001. By contrast, with Matrix you just go with Element and it's pretty straightforward at that point and is largely comparable to Discord.I use xmpp similarly to the way you use it. I've got my wife and my team at work on it so we can communicate easily, but I don't really know of any particular xmpp server besides the one I run.

@helene Mybe it’s not so intersting because I’m too new here, but… I got here in 2022, it was, I think, march of february, because I was intrested in open source software (just searching “open source X app“ with X is anything I haven’t found already) and found out that fedi has mastodon instance about my favorite game series, but because it was having issues with registering I started to search another place and after kinda boring “Gamemaking.social“ ended up in Naiji’s Pleroma instance, Udongein.xyz. :abunhdhappy: I liked it a lot because of people, some speaking my native language and some are just cute. :aquayeah: Also, _Pleroma is just perfect in sense of decorative things like, custom emoji, Markdown and truly transparent images!Husky works with Pleroma better than other apps, but I use standart PleromaFE when I use my pc.

@helene It's quite simple, actually: I had heard of Mastodon at some point, and thought it sounded like a neat way to communicate with the world, in much the same way I did on Twitter. But moving here would mean losing contact with everyone I knew through Twitter, so I was handcuffed to Twitter for a few years more, until the difficulty of using Twitter's user interface started to outweigh the desire to stay in touch with them, and I picked an instance and never looked back.
