@G117CH @HeWhoWalksBehindTheCorn01 @ins0mniak @p we get a couple a day that we just nuke when we see it or get reports for it but i think they come from places like fiver where an indian will put up "SEO services" for sale and they just register them on a bunch of clandestine sites. while in practice something like poast would put their SEO super high on google because we have a couple million unique hits a month, but we have them all blocked via user_agent string in nginx so its just wasted time for them and for us to remove them. we did have a genuine lawyer sign up yesterday that I've chosen to leave in the event poast or one of its users needs representation in minnesota lol

@G117CH @HeWhoWalksBehindTheCorn01 @ins0mniak @p thanks but there will always be people who hate me because i chose not to put up with their abuse and im okay with thatfurther to the above lines, if you use them in nginx that will also almost completely cut out any spam you get. before we were using that config on all of poasts properties (twtr.plus, poast.tv, et al) we would get spam emails to our support email asking to pay us for "articles" about random shit on our sites. now we rarely if at all ever get them. good way to mitigate annoyances

@G117CH @HeWhoWalksBehindTheCorn01 @ins0mniak @p poast mediaproxy's everyones media except pawoo.net, baraag.net and varishangout.net which we don't proxy because of the nature of the media that is commonly on a lot of those servers. everyone elses we proxy because if we didnt each time a poast user loads their timeline which at any point in time is between 2-3000 people at any given time, each one of those is a hit to the external servers which can overload those instances. most people dont buy hardware to host their instance with the intent that there's going to be a couple thousand people fetching a file every time they post something. we mediaproxy it to 1. protect our users ip (as we obfuscate them when we have to log) from being leaked to outside servers and 2. prevent those servers from being majorly overloaded trying to feed media to thousands of users simultaneously (and the massive bandwidth bill that comes with that)

(The behavior is the problem to begin with, so it should be obvious in retrospect.) Location is fungible (VPN/Tor), user-supplied data is completely unreliable (UA strings), but the people causing problems can't change what they're interested in finding or doing, and they usually (of necessity) skip steps that humans take.This is one of my issues with Cloudflare: regular shitty spambots just waltz right through, and I get marked as a bot when just clicking regular shit in a browser, because they're trying this dumb browser fingerprinting stuff, they're looking at IP addresses instead of problems. So FSE's monitoring stuff includes things like logging which IPs are making the most reqs 2 standard deviations above mean (that is, FSE detects drag on the system and reports IP rather than detecting IP and guessing that these IPs will drag the system), attempts to scan for WordPress logins, SSL fingerprinting, scraping. Cloudflare does it backwards and the results are predictable: it's wrong most of the time, regular people have to click the boats and bots just slip past it.
