The new mastodon users seem to be very careful to try to not disturb others, which i find interesting. I wonder how much of that is due to them not hosting their own instance, and as such not feeling like it's their personal space to express themselves?

@helene I'd say it's more about the quantity of guidelines and warnings + being on a new place that causes this. A long list of rules or hearing constantly about etiquette and guidelines can make you feel like the mindset is very different from any other social network. A good amount of the feditips or similar tags I've seen contained a lot of said guidelines. I'd personally feel a bit overwhelmed where everything I do seem to require me to act a particular way, and therefore I'd rather observe more than interact until I get how people behave around here.When I personally joined fedi it was a smol instance with a few rules but which were more than clear to me. I tended to interact with others the same way others did with me since I was still discovering the place, and occasionally people would tell me about what I should be advised to do without ever getting any kind of obligation. Not overwhelming me with info helped a lot for me to have a smooth start around here

@helene I think people is careful at first because this is new and they need to test their boundaries. In Twitter, for example, you know where those are before even making an account. But here you don't, because this is kind of a wild west.At least I see this as that. @captainepoch Probably so; though, I guess it would apply to people who have mostly been on Twitter and no other media platforms. But, there are people on Twitter who do not hesitate to say what they think, so I just can't help but wonder. Maybe it has to do with it being new to them, indeed!

@nikiboo Depends on the instance, I think! You're definitely not going to see some user bases on mastosoc, for example. But it could definitely be a factor; though I'm under the impression that people are generally much nicer here than on Twitter anyway. Federated networks don't really seem to work well with hate (which makes sense, structurally and sociologically speaking)

@helene personally ive found it somewhat easier to be upfront with people here than on twitter on twitter i always had the thought in my backmind that some retard was gonna see my post and get a mob of like minded retards to harass me but on a place where kiwifarms has a active presence i feel less likely to be gangstalked then on twitter

@helene New user here. I hadn’t considered that, it’s possible.But Twitter has been a place where there’s little kindness unless you have really pruned your follows & followers, & where drawing attention to yourself could get you overwhelmed, even if it’s with positive attention, & a lot more of it is very negative—Anyway, I think I just feel a desire not to wreck the place with my Twitter educated instincts. I think I’m leaning on courtesy bc I come from a rude place

@helene I've recently moved from twitter and I feel like people here are different. Even though my interests include anime, games and tech stuff, sometimes I simply don't understand them as a simple married dude in his 30s :ac_sadness: But then again, I don't really have a lot of common with my peers as well :blobcatcomfthink: and I end up being a lonely loner on a lonely instance :blobcatcomfcool:
