@atoponceSpell check hell. First world problems.Let's try again. Why TF did they use the term, resilver?(Remember to wait a few seconds and let the spell checker catch up and then press reply)

@Tay0 It comes from the concept of corrupted data as being "tarnished" data.Silver, the metal alloy, corrodes known an "tarnishing". It turns black as you've probably noticed with your grandma's fine silverware. To remove the tarnish, you "re-silver" it with a tarnisher remover to recover its sheen. When your data gets corrupted or "tarnished", ZFS "re-silvers" the data, removing that corruption, either via a mirrored disk, or through parity calculation.

@atoponceI know but that's a stupid term to me. There had to be a better term for it. What do other projects use?

@Tay0 I think most storage administrators like the word play with "resilver". If you're going to dedicate your career to making sure people's data is available, reliable, and full of integrity, you might as well have fun with the terminology. To be a bit pedantic, a "resilver" should only be applied to mirrors (get it?), but "rebuild" to parity-based arrays. I think ZFS doesn't care about that distinction however.¯\_(ツ)_/¯
