That's it. Ukrainian SAM's still operate over the rest of country and suppress Russian capacity making the rest of Ukrainian airspace contested.

Just because they can lob anti air missiles at Russian planes does not mean Russia lacks air superiority. If they couldn't, Russia would have air *supremacy*. That's why the term exists.

Too many people half-assed everything, leaving too many gaps to cover realistically. The war in Ukraine will no doubt embolden Taiwan to resist rather than surrender quickly, and they have really built up their coastal defensesI think Taiwan could hold up Chinese forces for quite a while, especially in the built up areas around Taipei. But I'm just a civvie who plays fantasy strategy games. So maybe it's a problem of logistics for China to actually get forces into Taiwan to occupy it.I think the Taiwanese reaction to the Ukraine situation is probably more along the lines of "yeah, the yanks aren't going to come and save us". I expect China to take Taiwan while positioning it's other forces for conflict with the US. Whether such conflict arises is questionable and how much China can commit to Taiwan will probably determine how long Taiwan holds out.

I think if anything, the Ukrainian war shows how much that experience matters. Urban combat is very difficult, especially if China, like Russia, tries their best to avoid civilian casualties.

Yes, but most of that formation is empty space and the pacific is also unbelievably huge. Plus it's not like there's any straits they have to transit through.Satellites aren't very useful for this. They move at a fixed speed (which for most orbits is much faster than a carrier) so even if they pick up the carrier group with one pass there's no guarantee they'll find it the next. It's a lot easier for naval vessels to change course than satellites to change orbit.

I'm not certain China will be as careful as Russia when it comes to civilian casualties but they'll probably try to keep the infrastructure intact as much as possible. It's a tricky situation since it's a matter of pride for them to retake Taiwan rather than "save" the Taiwanese.There's also the question of whether enough of the Taiwanese will defend Taiwan. I dunno if there's still a strong anti-China sentiment and how many people have been bought off.I wonder if China looks at how England dealt with Ireland and applies those lessons to Taiwan?

All of these scenarios means WW3. If I had to guess what would happen, it would be this. Unless an attack after a major U.S. Disaster occurs (California gets hit with a 10.0 earthquake, ridiculously large tsunami) conventional war shall last ~3 months. Shipping and navy takes major damage. Massive bombing campaigns will take place with non-nuclear cruise missiles. This will take out military factories and oil refineries. Drone attacks and orbital weapons will have large effects. After that, biological and chemical weapons will be used to "dislodge" the enemy. At month 4, tactical nukes will be used. U.S. Black projects will shoot some nuclear ICBMs down. Major cities are wasted. A full blown barrage is never used because you don't want to run out of nukes and the war can still be "salvaged". Keep some nukes till your at your last stand. No nukes means capitulation to a nuclear power. Each country will proceed to "dig in" in large trench networks. This will be in the mountains. Food and clean water will have run out by now. City wide riots. USA collapses on a civilizational level. China and Russia take U.S. from opposite sides. They don't rely on modern technology that was destroyed. Being less industrialized unironically helps. A bloody attrition fronts occurs but the U.S. inevitably falls.

Fishing vessels mostly have limited range. Huge fish factories can go anywhere but there's less of them. Merchant ships mostly stick to established shipping channels and are fitted with transponders broadcasting their position. If one wandered a few hundred miles off course into the path of a carrier group it'd be both very easy to avoid and very suspicious.Also in time of war it'd be a valid target if operating under a chinese flag. If it were foreign flagged and got caught doing military recon then that flag registry (and most others) would likely delist all chinese owned vessels to avoid being drawn into the conflict.

It was a fantastically corrupt procurement, and the same group then did their best to sabotage the M16 and was terminated with extreme prejudice. It ended up being hard to manufacture (Garand retired before it), including some machining operations on the receiver that had to be done by hand. Too heavy and powerful to replace the lighter guns, not hardly heavy enough or built right to replace the BAR. Not an awful battle rifle, but there were already much more modern ones available, including the AR-10 on which the AR-15 and then M16 were based on.

You can do much better, primarily by enclosing all the M1 Garand moving parts inside the gun so it doesn’t get fouled up in the field, but it’s got good ergonomics except for a failure to do straight line recoil (see the original assault rifle and the AR-10 etc.), including a good trigger and the Garand’s iron sights which we continued to use for the M16 and on.Similarly, I don’t get the impression the F-35 is awful as a F-16/F-18 replacement, especially if its stealth features prevent it from being targeted by radar guided weapons. Could we have done better? And/or the citing of the projected total lifetime cost of the US fleet which was always going to be tremendous since it’s replacing three planes and, again, stealth, that drives up costs for fantastic gains.OK, for the Navy it would have been really good for it to have two engines, that’s definitely a step backwards, and I’m concerned about how little 25mm ammo they all carry, but as missile and bomb trucks, well, we’ll maybe see some day.

As of this year, F35 fleet has reducing operational readiness. Now, either the organization in general is degrading (which is possible) or logistical train is just not well done yet. It's clearly in teething mode still. So either push it through, or more likely they'll have to grab the tech they like and just build a new better focused air-frame. And as far as Marines, just give them an apache with jetfighter styrofoam kit body. They won't notice.

That you don’t get that the stealth requirement inherently increases maintenance costs, well, I’m not sure what to say. For example the skin has a metal weave which is then covered by a coating…. There’s other details which require doing maintenance so as to not increase its radar signature. You don’t have to have it survive very many encounters with radar guided missiles for that to pay off handsomely.You’re probably right about it being in its teething phase, but still it’s already at least three times better than the TFX, which I again repeat only had one of five varieties actually fly, and very effectively, the F-111 for deep interdiction missions, plus as a nuke platform. Used in combat once against Libya where one was lost but otherwise it performed very well.The Marines would notice the lack of speed, and you can’t say V/STOL isn’t cool. Just not so cool for it to have generally compromised the design. And you’re not an American, right? That is, you probably don’t understand the political power of the Marines.
