How do people feel about single-user instances? With federation people already interact across domains, so are single-user instances just a natural and good progression? Or do they fail on a social level? Perhaps you can't be part of a community if you're not *in* that community? Do you trust someone more if they're on your instance? And do single-user instances fail discoverability, or are boosts and the federated timeline enough to avoid isolation?

@jpab I guess it's a nice way of being part of the federation but nobody can ready your PMs as you're the admin of the server?

@simonschreibt I think the admin(s) of whatever instance the other person is on will also be able to read any PMs so I don't think it adds much extra privacy in that way.I kind of like the idea of a single-user instance on my own domain for the same reason I like the idea of using an email address on my own domain: It would avoid tying my (fedi) identity to some other entity. Plus shared instances do sometimes shut down.(But here I am on gamedev.place, so idk)

@jpab Yes, the shutdown is something which worries me. On the other side, can happen to big services as well. See vine. Here at Masto at least moving to another instance is built/designed into the process.

@simonschreibt @jpab after you've been here for a while you don't even worry about it as moving imstances is less trouble than it sounds, even if you couldn't import your data for whatever reason

@jpab I'm on a single user instance. To me, they are are a good thing since it helps decentralisation.I don't think people will judge me differently because I'm on a single user instance. On the contrary even, there's always a chance someone had a bad run-in with someone else from your instance and now they have that in their mind when judging you. On a single user instance, if someone had a bad run in, that person will have been you. This is also true the other way around; If I mess up somewhere, it's on me and I didn't bring a bad name to any one else. In a weird way, this gives me a feeling of being more free actually.I never missed the Home-TL. People I want to keep following, I just follow. I think the home-tl has it's merits for discoverability, and maybe some sense of community, but the latter isn't something I ever missed. There's enough community feeling with the people I follow and the fact that many of them follow each other.Discoverability is also not really a problem. Just following one or a couple of people already starts filling up the twkn nicely. And while it may still be less active than on a bigger instance, it will be tailored more to yourself. My advise is, just do it and see what it brings for you :)

@shpuld @simonschreibt @jpab you learn to embrace the epheremality of it and stop caring about importing and exporting everything :yousoro:
