I require every school to have a computer literacy class that is mandatory (except for those that are literal teenage software engineers that could literally teach the class. There are ao many people who don't know how to use the devices they possess in a way that doesnt seem like it was designed for primates. (Looking at you google)Also, if we could cut the "making" and "coding" shit out of the vocabulary, that wouls be fucking amazing. Nobody in their right minds would call themselves a "coder" unless they are a seven year old who is on scratch that just figured out how to put an image on the screen. Not only does it sound cringey, but "making" really understates the amount of effort it takes to create an "app". You dont just "ah yes, got done with coding the florpus in the cloud, and i was making an app for it, its really cool because it has one incredibly generic feature!!1!"I also just hate the term "app". Like. Anyone using this in an environment where there are actual developers around will make themselves look like a fool. 🔥🔥🔥 BURN IT. 🔥🔥🔥 BURN THE VOCABULARY. 🔥🔥🔥 BURN IT 🔥🔥🔥

@Froggo I support a mandatory techno-literacy class. I'm sick and tired of talking to people about **basic fucking concepts** that don't require anyone to do any research. For example, "my computer is so slow." No shit, Debra. You're running **Windows on spinning rust**. Get a fucking SSD and shut up."When I open 1000 tabs on Chrome, my computer grinds to a halt!" Maybe stop using a dog shit browser and close all the tabs you don't need, Jeremy. And my personal favorite, "this 15 year old computer can't run Windows 10, make it work." No, grandpa. Understand this computer is older than people who make 12 alt accounts on Instagram and it can't keep up with Microshit's dogshit OS system requirements and install Linux or something.

@saturn @Froggo even more if they expect windows to run on a 10, year old computer that's so old that it's old enough to go to high school and about as slow as a turtle on weed

@Jessica@fedi.absturztau.be @saturn@pleroma.saturno.black I'd just like to also point out. Software has become SO BLOATED. Windows is just BLOATWARE.

@Froggo @saturn windows has a lot of bloatware, but when it comes to certain tasks, windows is still fasterthough that's probably more to do with optimization than bloat

@Jessica@fedi.absturztau.be @saturn@pleroma.saturno.black If they actually figured out how to make their source look less like sphagetti, they might actually have a major performance boost without upgrading the hardware 🤯🤯🤯

@Froggo @saturn a lot of that performance gain was eaten up though, they decided to run the entire kernel virtually, which takes a lot more work to run, but makes your system more secure, that's why they enforced the TPM requirement in the first place

@Jessica @Froggo but when it comes to certain tasks, windows is still fasterHow is Windows faster than common Linux distros? From experience:Windows install is slower than Pop OSLaunching programs from keyboard shortcuts takes a couple seconds compared to almost instantly on Arch, andSystem updates don’t take hours to download and install

@saturn @Froggo linux almost always has a worse GPU app support, so it's slower. and a lot of games need extra configuration and/or run worse in general

@Froggo @saturn after you go through the setup screen, the only thing you have to do is ctrl alt delete and the setting up screen goes away. the only thing it does it install crap so opening the control panel is quicker. also you can create an "answer file" that will go through the setup for you and become an unattended install. also with programs like Nlite you can create a custom windows ISO with all the bloat removed down to your liking.

@Jessica @Froggo after you go through the setup screen, the only thing you have to do is ctrl alt delete and the setting up screen goes awayWell now I know. Still, I’d prefer to have a “skip this part” button instead of obsure knowledge.you can create a custom windows ISO with all the bloat removedYes, but wouldn’t this violate EULA on top of being a hassle? If I’m going to go through the effort of basically making my own OS, I may as well use a superior base.

@saturn@pleroma.saturno.black That's just...not true for Linux. Windows cannot do so because of file locking, while you can delete a running executable without any issue on Linux, allowing live replacement and updating of software. It's not a question of safety.

@Jessica@fedi.absturztau.be @saturn@pleroma.saturno.black Fedora has a release cycle twice per year, you only get heavily tested releases. It's the upstream of CentOS. Other distros have more up-to-date packages and take the risk of a little more breakage to offer up-to-date software instead.

@privateger @saturn yeah but fedora *just works* and is in my experience the easiest to manage, since it has RPM fusion which is basically the AUR but only for binaries, and it has easy driver installs from ubuntu, and packages don't need to be entirely up to date like ubuntu.

@Jessica@fedi.absturztau.be @saturn@pleroma.saturno.black I use Arch for my main OS and Debian on all my servers. A Timeshift hook on update makes it easy to just revert anything bad that may happen. If you want stuff to just work, Debian has never let me down. Everyone has a different need though.
