What’s the stance on moderation on #mastodon ? Will hate speech be removed? By whom? Everywhere or just on instances? How is it dealing with “anything goes” instances? #freedomofspeech #freespeech

@haentz From what I've seen over the last couple years, there's a multi-point approach:- Most instances are too small for nefarious folks to target- Instances are encouraged to stay small for this and other reasons- When instances grow enough to need moderation, it's usually pretty light. Owner either handles it themselves or brings in enough funds for a dedicated mod- The largest instances have dedicated mods or teams- Most instances use a shared block list to keep out the riffraff

@Corfiot @haentz Well, I agree in a way that people will continue to be people, and some will continue to bring that to the table. Such is humanity. But I see moderation as a journey, not a destination. It's tough, but I'd argue Masto has done a better job so far than most other networks. Many communities here are moderated well or too small to pose a problem. Most of the hate folks get segregated to their hate instances, which then get blocked by most of the network.

@Corfiot @haentz Plus, looking beyond mere features, there's also the *incentives* to consider here. With no ads or investors here, there is no incentive to tolerate toxic behavior in the name of gRoWtH and eNgAgeMenT.Instance admins are free to enforce incentives that align with human beings, not business bullshit. These differences inform many of Mastodon's design decisions, admins, and communities.
