This is what's wrong with the tech industry. The expectation that one should give their free time *EVERY DAY* or you're somehow "not passionate".My response to that would be fuck you and your shitty fucking culture. My kids and family are FAR more important to me than your ridiculous expectations.</rant> 🙃

@kev It's a misunderstanding based on the definition of the word "passionate". You don't have to be passionate to do a job well. Passionate about working at a cash register? Give me a break.Passionate about art, waxing lyricals after hours? Okay. But you can be "dedicated" - to good service. A woodworker can be dedicated to quality, without being passionate. So can a programmer. The problem with the quote is "programming is not for you". No, good work doesn't require passion, just dedication

@kev Who is their ideal candiate? The one who "grinds all day" AKA is all about that married-to-work lifestyle? My guess : It's an unmarried male, preferably below 35 with no hobbies, extracurriculars, social life, addiction. He prefers to stay back after work, underpromises and over-performs and does your work for you at 1/4 the market salary? Did I check all the boxes?

@kev FREAKING SECONDED. I hate this attitude with a passion. How do you dare have a family, an unrelated hobby, a disability?(If I wanted to be especially suspicious bastard about it, this is a good way to lower the self-esteem of everybody who isn't the uber-obsessed programmer, which then makes them easier to push around, underpay, owerwork.)Sure, I know a guy who lives and breathes coding. I admire him! But the rest of us do good work as well.

@kev Yeah, I think it also makes people more productive, it's more of an assumption I have based on a sample size of 1 so take it with a pinch of salt, but I am so much less productive in weeks that I'm on-call, even if nobody calls that week, because I always have to be prepared to switch on it makes me less productive when I'm working.

@kev @raboof @kev about original poster: tell me you are in a high position in a game company without telling you are...Most people in the game industry don't have time to do side project because they are working overhours, consequence of tight schedules and mismanagement. Time is a luxury, and when you are exhausted, this fun project you do at home start to look not so fun.He might have time to kill, but people working under him likely don't.

@kev I wonder if they'd be upset if their dentist didn't practice at home, drilling teeth every day to maintain their passion for their craft. Or perhaps they want firemen putting out fires at home too, to maintain their passion? What if there's no fire? Should they start one?:flan_facepalm:

Or for Mastodon, more space than on the phone's screen 😉. That's basically it.Life is life and work is work. You can be darn good at work without wasting all your life. 😃

@kev Well, I would say there are plenty other things wrong with the tech industry and the general culture in tech, but this certainly makes the list. Let's not even talk about companies. It starts even in school, where there's a certain prestige attached to being that sort of hardcore programmer type who uses VIM/Emacs and is actively working on FOSS stuff and "passion" projects and attends hackathons and speaks at tech conferences and is usually a dude, even before you graduate.

@kev I lived this way for about seven years, while working in IT for a large bank. At the time, I thought the pay justified the near complete lack of a non-work life. When the recession came along, myself and more than half the IT department were shit-canned, outright fired under a new policy specially implemented for downsizing.I now work in the non-profit sector, for dramatically less pay, but I love my job, and I'm much happier in general.Fuck corporate culture.

@kev I was going to say one thing, and then I realized it’s the gaming industry. I’ve worked in many verticals and many startups. The gaming industry is singularly unique in terms of the expectations. There were also huge rewards in that space, but it is brutal. If the entire tech industry were like the gaming industry in this regard, the economy would probably collapse.

@kev Honestly, video game jobs are mostly Z-tier jobs. Everyone wants to make video games, so there's a massive supply of workers and a tiny demand for them relatively speaking, so working conditions are bad, pay is bad, and if you don't like it there's 200 people sleeping in line to replace you. Best of all, you'll probably spend 15 years doing mouse AI for one scene where the player is in a dump and mice are decorations.A lesson I intend to pound into my son's head is that the meaning of life doesn't come from your job. I intend to teach him economics early, so he realizes he should be looking for opportunities with little supply and high demand so he can have the resources to go out and live the life he wants to live without using all his free time sucking up to some corporate overlord to let him have just a speck of self-actualization.

@kev Rather sad that all nuance (if the poster had any) is lost in the character limit. Not everyone “needs” to be passionate and not everyone can “afford” to be passionate. A choice (afforded by the privileges of circumstances/locus and then acted upon) such as this should never be used as a criterion to hire a person. ps: #irony that I’m responding within this word limit.

@kev The essence of the question is; "If you don't have to program to earn an income, what would you do instead?" and if the answer is "programming something", then that is what he is looking for.I used to do the same, except looking for something "creative" (as in creating things, which could be art, mechanical, video, software, ...)But everyone are different, and with different priorities, so better to find this out in interview rather than weeks later.

@mike @kev The question I always ask a developer in an interview is to tell me what they have developed outside "work". Good developers always have something. Is this a bad question or expectation?

@kevI wonder if he codes at home during crunch time or during vacation or when he got the flu... If coding was my passion and life blood I would run my own company and not get burnt out in the games industry...

@kev Agreed. I worked 37 hours a week for decades, with no time for side projects because I have a wife and children. I always made this clear to a new manager. Never seemed to get in the way of promotions, interesting work, etc. I think you need to rest to be productive.

@lain @kev it's really that simple, people like that can fuck off, there's no wrong answer to this question, it's a personal question on a job interview

@underlap same here. The first conversation I always have is around my commitment to work:life balance.Hasn’t been a problem so far, but that’s down to culture. I think I’m lucky that were I work has a great culture.

@kev Same here. The culture in IBM and VMware was at least officially in favour of work-life balance. Surprisingly, the same was true of the start-up Interface21 (later called SpringSource) when I joined it. The phrases "family first" and "sustainable pace" helped to justify the approach.

@kev No different than Elon Musk's hiring practices at Tesla. I just want people who are innovators so I can steal their ideas. Reminds me of productivity salesmen who used to write with chalk on the floor of their factories that a rival company was producing X product more than them to get them to work harder, both positive and negative emotions like shaming can motivate. Problem is where is the incentive for the worker.

@nativebreed Depends on what you do with it I guess. If an applicant told you that they don't develop at home because that's their time to spend with their family, do you consider that a negative? If so, yes, that's a bad expectation.@kev

@kev I bet that person also posts tweets saying "we'd love to have a more diverse workplace but for some strange reason we mostly only get applications from young single men".Or probably not - he's unlikely to be that self-aware that diversity even crops up on his radar.
