OK my #introduction / #introductions: I'm into #science related stuff, including: - #astronomy (which I do professionally) - #python - #datavisualization - #galaxies Programming, writing and note taking tools like:- #Vim / #Neovim - #Emacs (yes, I use both!)- #orgmode - #orgroam And #Music, including- #classicalmusic - #folkmusic - #metal - #punk ...And a bunch of more stuff, but that seems to be the most important things. I am also obnoxiously opinionated.

And yes, I use both #Vim / #neovim and #Emacs. I know, it's weird. It's like someone liking both Beatles and Rolling Stones. It just won't do. But thing is, Vim and Emacs are ostensibly both text editors, but they are text editors in so profoundly different ways. Vim is a text editor the same way a Yoshihiro Gyutou is a knife. It does one thing, and it does it really really well. It is simple, yet everything is streamlined towards that one task. Emacs is a text editor the same way an iPhone is a telephone. Which is to say, it is basically a platform, a framework, which can do anything you want, but which happens to also be very good at manipulating text.

If I want to fix a few lines, move some columns around or batch rename a list of files, I pop into #Vim and I am done before I realized I'd started. Could I do the same thing in Emacs? Yes, but not as quick, simple and elegant. But in #Emacs, I can integrate a pile of things that I otherwise couldn't. I can manage my emails (multiple accounts) inside Emacs. I can use org-mode to take notes and maintain a #Zettelkasten note system, to keep my daily to-do lists, manage large research projects from the idea stage over detailed todo management to writing the research article publishing the results, all in one place. I can use it as a computational notebook, authoring environment, time manager, ... - all in the same files, all using the same extremely powerful set of keyboard shortcuts and commands, and keep it all integrated in a way that makes me feel like a magician.

The old joke goes that "#Emacs is a great operating system, it only lacks a decent editor". And I agree that the modal editing philosophy of #Vim is by far superior to the key chords of Emacs. Luckily, since Emacs can do practically anything, it can also mimic #Vim. Vim, but with all the tons of extra functionality that Emacs can do but vim cannot. Emacs is a fine operating system, and with Evil-mode, it finally has an exquisite text editor, too! Thank you for coming to my TED talk.

@thriveth I used to use both #Emacs and #vi (not vim) in parallel for decades. There is nothting wrong in being #bi. Since only one year or two I became an Emacs-totaller. Esp. my work with remote files changed from "ssh remotehost & vi somefile" to "C-x C-f /ssh:remotehost:somefile". Also, I use less shell commands and do more things in Emacs, since it became my window manager #EXWM.

@debacle I am currently eyeing the Emacs Application Framework pretty hard but I haven't had the time to test it out. I need my floating windows though - tiling mostly, but floating sometimes and I'm not gonna give that up.

@thriveth #EXWM is a tiling window manager, but it does support floating windows, too: "M-x exwm-floating-toggle-floating" or "C-c C-t C-f" or "s-t" toggles the current window to your liking.#Emacs

@thriveth At the same time I migrated to #mu4e from #mutt, which used to be a vi area for me. Editing emails in #Emacs feels much better now.

@debacle oh, I had no idea, thanks! So far I'm pretty happy with my AwesomeWM setup though, not sure I have much incentive to change it at the moment.

@thriveth Probably not worth the trouble. I wasn't happy with my old #XFCE, and had to pick between either #i3 / #sway or #EXWM which "works for me".
