I just watched a conversation between Rachel Maddow and Josh Gerstein from Politico about the leak of the SCOTUS decision that is expected of overturn Roe v. Wade:Apparently Alito writes that the decision should only be applied to abortion and not to other rights under the privacy umbrella like contraception and same-sex marriage. Gerstein says he’s old enough to remember (as is probably everyone old enough to have found democracy.town) SCOTUS saying, “Don’t try to apply our opinion on X to the situation y because it’s different” and then going right ahead and doing just that. Maddow pointed out that’s telling in itself that SCOTUS is even thinking that far ahead, and our contraception and our marriage rights are on their minds. @TonyStark mentioned birth control just today, but it's something many of us have worried about for a long time. People with IUDs who knew they would need replacing in the next four years were calling their doctors in late 2016, just in case.

@MariaHillBirth control, same sex marriage, it's all up for grabs now. It's not a coincidence LGBTQ people have been under attack. The White Christian Nationalist authoritarian theocracy is here. The SCOTUS has lost credibility. Someone accused me of hyperbole yesterday. It's not possible to be hyperbolic about this.

@MariaHill @TonyStark People have been accusing the people warning of this of hyperbole on this since 2016. It’s horrible, it’s just so gut-wrenchingly cruel, this and the chilling fear it instills in anyone who cares about any of the issues you just listed. Last week Sarah Kendzior and Andrea Chalupa had on Imani Gandy and Jessica Mason Pieklo had an interview FROM DECEMBER talking about exactly this situation. @chewbacca Is that rhetorical or a legit question? I'm thinking there are going to be spontaneous marches in wherever in your city the marches typically are, the day they announce this, and the local organizers of the Women's March organization will probably be out on a Saturday soon. I would find out who those organizers are where you live. If you want to organize something else, you'll want to find out who to contact regarding permits for your city/town, then think about how you'll get funding for things such as portapotties that they'll make you have for the area, and if you'll have speakers/a stage/any other costs. While I've done other types of event organizing, I don't organize marches (I do attend them), so I'd probably find someone who has experience with organizing one, either individuals or an organization. But those are the things that occur to me based on what I've seen.@TonyStark

@TonyStark @MariaHill They waited forty-nine years to codify something as crucial as abortion rights. In that time, they've had numerous opportunities to introduce such a bill, when they actually had the power to push it through, but they didn't.

@deadtomDemocrats did control the White House and Congress during 2009 to 2011, but the Supreme Court had at least five Republican justices, even after Democrat Elena Kagan replaced Republican John Paul Stevens in 2010.And on and on. And I shouldn't have to explain what SCOTUS has done with voting rights, etc. What needed to happen is for people not to let these appointments go to Republicans in the first place, but you can stick to that dumb narrative if it makes you feel better about yourself.@MariaHill

@TonyStark It's hard to believe any American who isn't a straight, white, Christian man, or maybe a straight, white, Christian woman who thinks she is safe by virtue of having that marriage and thinks a life-threatening pregnancy could never happen to her, could see that as hyperbole.The rest of us need reproductive rights, both to not get pregnant in the first place or to end and unwanted one, and the right to form families with whom we choose.
