@bipolaron For the original poster they can always see the ‘right’ number! Same for people on that same instance(-minus the blocks) :blobcatgiggle: on ‘remote’ instances from that toot it’s the amount of ‘known’ users who boosted / fav’ed the toot! (Hope I make sense!)

@stux Don't undervalue numbers! Communities live and die by their numbers. Too small, and many people wont end up joining -- they need people to latch on to; too big, and they stop really being communities.I get that people trying to subvert corporate, capitalist frameworks of public engagement are going to be a little gun-shy about some of the emblems of those frameworks, and that those frameworks are steeped in numbers-chasing, but it's important to not conflate the things problematic entities look at and consider with the entities themselves. Numbers are good if the serve your purpose.The corporate entities care about numbers, though, because their purpose is growth of revenue. They're trying to monetize their users, and that monetization is at the micro-scale. They're trying to squeeze a small amount of revenue and stock value out of a large number of people. They want more people to squeeze, and to figure out how to squeeze harder.Just stay motivated by something better.
