I am thinking about disabling registration for social.linux.pizza for a while. What do you think? This is because I want to keep the cost of the instance kinda manageble.

@selea Honestly, this isn't something you should put to a poll - other people don't have to burden the financial cost.Maybe you should ask for donations?Another option would be to go invite-only instead

@selea Absolutely do it. I've been saying this a few times during the last days. I'd rather see long lasting and stable instances for their users than chase quick user numbers. Slow and steady wins the race.

@selea Perhaps the server costs might be more manageable if you had a consistent stream of income, aka donations?

@rubenwardy @selea honestly, going invite only is definitely an option. I'd put it on the consider list.

@selea having an existing instance with a smaller group of people is so much better than not having one :) do what feels right for you :)

@fbievan @rubenwardy I have asked for donations, but I really dont want to beg for it.Invite only is the option instead of keeping registration completely open

@selea I think that a one-time donation upon registration is one of the things that helped keep Metafilter going strong in the mid-2000s. And the fee was only $5. They also had a donation box open for a time as well. I also think it's good to plan for a large influx of users, but it's ALSO good to maybe share the load with other instance creators whom you trust. So if you feel it's too much, recommend folks try the other instances and then link back up with yours?

@selea one of the beauties of decentralization is that every instance restricts its growth to what's manageable. That way the whole network is within limits of moderation, costs etc.

@selea if donations are not going to meet the expenses involved then you should absolutely limit registrations. You are providing a valuable service already just by running the instance, and it is not fair to ask you to bear the financial cost as well.

@jeang3nie I have thought about that,I have since start - not tried to beg for donations. And I recently asked for some. And currently, if the current trend keeps up - about 25% will be covered by donations while 75% will be from my own pocket.I really love it, and if I could - I would finance everything myself since it is worth it for me alone. But since it brings value for others too, maybe some want to "share the burden" a bit :P

@jeang3nie Hopefully, I can get cheap colocation (I have thought about asking the city I live in if they want to contribute, but I have not dared) and a internet connection.I have the hardware in my garage, and they could technically support hundreds of thousands of users - I just need a place to rack them up.

@selea As a new user, I feel I can’t in good conscience vote to lock the door behind me 😬 But I totally get wanting to keep costs manageable; I’d be +1 to switch to invite-only, and would gladly donate monthly to keep the instance going ❤️

@selea if you’re worried about the cost, then do it. you worrying has its own cost, and running an instance is hard enough without giving yourself extra stress :blobheart:

@selea I guess I'm glad I got in when I did. Kind of a tough one. On one hand it should be open to grow. On the other... if you're footing the bill that can be tough.

@selea that's a tough one.Asking for donations its not begging. You can ask to remove the instance from the recommended ones in the official app. Maybe it will help a bit.At the end of the day, your mental health is more important

@selea Could you somehow divulge how high the cost is? Ballpark figure, or maybe "if every user on linux.pizza would donateX then..." just so we get an idea of how to support? This is a great instance and should be open for all if it is "just" or mainly a money issue?

@jc Well, it every registered user on this instance chipped in 50 cents (half a dollar), it would cover the cost. :)The cost of this instance is about 130 EUR each Month, including domain, DNS, and such. So actually not that much, but probably to much for a single person to finance themselves

@selea do you run v3.5.1 yet? It added some neat graphs on user retention. A rough estimate is that about 10-20% of users remain active. It will be interesting to see the retention from this last wave off users.
