@ChrisWere if you distribute the git repo via ssh to some of your servers https://www.passwordstore.org/ is a bit like a cloud solution. Though the most painful part is the gpg inside. I believe there is a port using https://github.com/FiloSottile/age as well somewhere. But beside of that it's awesome for shared password stores in teams as well

@ChrisWere I use a 32 random character password that is different for every site that I keep in my head. I have always used random character passwords So I merged old passwords add the first character of the site to the last place of the password. Then take the last on the site and added to the first of the password. Then the root is normally the same 3 passwords I merged but in a different order. I ran into issues a few times with this and that's when sites put character limits on passwords.

@ChrisWere KeePassXC is as local as you want it.It does detect file changes e.g. via Nextcloud Sync and updates/merges the file on write.Last time we had a race condition was back in the days with Owncloud and a Mac implementation of this, that just didn't care and overwrote the damn thing every time.

@ChrisWere I use BitWarden. I thought about self-hosting it, but honestly if I lost access to it my life would become extremely difficult so I want somebody a bit more competent than me to be responsible for it. I also pay for premium just so I can kick a little back to get developers for their work, and in return I get centralized 2FA TOTP and some minor file uploading, which is surprisingly useful sometimes.

@ChrisWere I use both. I use KeePass as a way to store password backups, one PW manager for passwords, and another for 2FA codes. The reason I use two is so that the 2FA code PW manager is never used or installed on the workstation, so if the endpoint is compromised, an attacker might get my passwords, but the 2FA codes are still out of reach.Every few months, I dump the cloud accounts, and import them into KeePass as a backup.

@ChrisWere It's "cloud based", but it's my own software running on my own server in the cloud.

@ChrisWereNot something one should brag about online: every bit of information you spread about yourself ease the work of any future attacker.A better question would be: "what kind of password manager you recommend?"To that question we can answer without revealing so much about us (except maybe good technical skills).____As for the matter I suggest you to keep the 2-3 most important passwords/private keys in your mind AND printed in a safe (just in case you forgot them or you die and your family need to gain access to the protected data). As a second choice (or for the second most important keys), you could get a dedicated device to always keep off-line, with an off-line password manager. And by "keep off-line" I mean that it shouldn't even have an ethernet, a SIM or a wifi ever enabled. Finally for less critical passwords and keys you could use an off-line password manager on a less trustworthy hardware, such as your personal laptop or your personal smartphone.NEVER use your work laptop or smartphone and NEVER EVER use an ONLINE password manager, not even on a hardware you control as your attack surface and threat would explode.

@ChrisWere KeePassXC on the laptop, KeePassDX on the phone, Syncthing with versioning (and local discovery) in-between. Changes to the db are picked up instantly by both apps even while in use. When outside the home, I enable the laptop's wifi hotspot to sync to the phone (which has a static IP).
