According to both tree ring and astronomical data it appears that approximately 230 years too many were counted between the 6th and 8th centuries or so. https://www.researchgate.net/publication/296060902_Astronomical_dating_of_Roman_time

But wouldn't that be hard to do with so many cultures all running on their own calendars and getting them synched up with a 230 year jump? Unironically, this makes me think.

@nozaki So the Chinese and Indians had their own chronologies but in the enlightenment European scholars bent them around our own... 🥴

I thought this would be the explanation for this, but it just seems like a bit of a stretch to me. Surely there must be records in older non-european civs where a lot of dates don't match up or something. Abuse your status as a student and try to find old travel journals or something. This is really interesting. If this is true, then 2012 hasn't happened yet. It would be nice to know the end of the world is still on track.

@nozaki So I had no idea how flimsy dating historical chronologies was in the first place. For example, coins are thought to be the best way to date an archaeological site. But ancient coins don’t have dates on them. They’re dated by the monarch on the coin. The monarch on the coin is dated by historians who themselves rely on ancient historians. The ancient historians mostly date things relative to other major events so it becomes this circular mess. This is why astronomy and tree rings and such are the one fool proof way of doing it. Problem is the astronomers would often fudge astronomical events so as to coincide with major events such as a rulers birth. So our whole historical chronology rests on a house of cards.

@Vril_Oreilly @nozaki Its been true that People don't know as much as we think we know. for the basic reason that wider knowledge is based on assumption and these assumptions add up over time. its the same for modern science we pretend we understand the universe because we make a series of reasonable assumptions that could all easily be wrong.

If I divorce events from a time or year in my head, I can start to understand how this could be possible. So everything in history happened (or didn't :akko_scream2:) but either maliciously or due to human error we misappropriated things to different time periods and possibly created a longer history than we thought.

Yes tree rings also have the issue. Some years they do not produce a ring, and some years they may produce multiple rings. Thank you friend.
